Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT400N Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router

Customer Review: Typical Unusable Nightmare by Linksys
Summary: 1 Stars

When I first got a broadband, cable-modem Internet connection in 2001, Linksys routers dominated the market.

Because Comcast.net's monthly rental fee for a cable modem was intolerable AND I had a manufacturer's coupon and rebate, I purchased a Motorola SURFboard cable modem at over 50% off the retail price. At that point, at least locally, Comcast installed and supported Motorola SURFboard cable modems only. Based upon the six years of service I got from that first Motorola SURFboard modem, my second cable modem was also a Motorola SURFboard (although I was on the phone with Comcast support over thirty minutes simply to get them to understand that they needed to replace the MAC address of the original cable modem with the MAC address of the new Motorola SURFboard). Comcast implemented DOCSIS 3.0 in my zip code in January 2009 and Comcast could not keep in stock the one model of DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola SURFboard cable modem they supported (with the alternatives being cheaply made junk). Comcast stopped supporting or offering the DOCSIS 2.0 SURFboard modem and offers a cheap cable modem with no documentation -- and about which Comcast's technicians no nothing and, in my case, cannot get to work.

I purchased a Netgear wireless router in August 2008 (based on the current version of the draft for the 802.11n standard) and it died a month after the warranty expired.

Linksys dominated the home router market at the time: The first one was DOA when I got it home, the second one (exchanged for the first) died in a week, and the third Linksys router failed in a month. I vowed to avoid Linksys routers, although I've had excellent luck with their PCI Ethernet cards with Linux and the one Windows computer on my LAN. My first working router, purchased for $269 from my local authorized Apple dealer in 2001, was an Xsense (MacXsense) model. It was worth every dollar and lasted for seven years -- the antithesis my my experience with Linksys.

I tried using D-Link's consumer/home routers, purchasing two: Each D-Link (wired) router died one month after the warranty expired.

I purchased the Linksys WRT400N dual-band router and, because I avoid installation software that comes with routers and run 64-bit Debian GNU/Linux on most of the LAN's computers, including a notebook with an Atheros wireless card, I could not use the setup software for this router (which requires Windows or Mac OS X).

For some reason the Web-based configuration interface for the Linksys WRT400N keeps "timing out," and I lose all settings, including those that I have saved. In addition, perhaps because of a browser incompatibility, after I am done with each configuration page and select the 'Apply' link, a new Web page appears (which I suspect is supposed to be a pop-up window, and I have the browser set to allow pop-ups from the router's URL) to confirm that the settings on each page have been saved. I then select the link/button to proceed but instead of receiving the next setup page I receive a "page not found" error and must use the browser's "back" option to return to the last setup page and then advance from there to the next. Whether I get through the configuration process (or it times out and I have to reset the router and "start from scratch"), the router is undetected by every wired and wireless computer on the network and entering the URL of the router to reconfigure it (whether I reset the router first or not) generates an error that the URL (the IP address, 192.168.1.1, is unreachable).

I am on my second Linksys WRT400N and I am tired of wasting my time with this router and with Linksys -- and I regret that I ever decided to give Linksys another chance. (Cisco's acquisition of Linksys did not improve product quality, as many pundits had predicted.)

I realize that many people buy and use Linksys routers and networking products exclusively and that they have never had a problem. My theory, which has no empirical evidence to support it, is that Linksys has quality control/QA issues with some products: I seem to have a constant string of bad luck with Linksys and their support staff are of not help.

I have reinstalled the Netgear router purchased in 2008 as a test: It allows only one computer at a time to access the cable modem, which offers no advantages except for the SPI offered by the router's NAT, which is working. (Plus, the Netgear is off-limits for wireless connections because it will not accept WPA2-PSK/AES-256 configuration I'd used when the router functioned, and the router defaults to WEP, which I would never use -- so the router is no broadcasting and I've enable MAC address filtering but entered no addresses.)

I am happy for everyone for which this router worked, but I definitely will continue avoiding Linksys routers.
