Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit RouterCustomer Review: Lynksys WRT 310N a disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
I needed a new router and Linksys is a leading brand so after looking a bit I decided to go with the next generation technology and by the new "N" systems.
It was very difficult to install, set up and run. It had serious problems dropping the signal off line over and over. I'm somewhat technically savvy and don't like to give up but this thing had problems from the beginning to the end. It also had problems with different kinds of wireless internet connection devices. All of the computers in the house are still "G" standard and the manual says it'll work just fine with them but it didn't. I called and did online chat with Linksys directly and they still couldn't fix it.
This device cost me 1 weeks time running around the house connecting IEEE cables, reseting computers, re-installing software, firmware, etc. . . . . . I finally took it back and bought the Linksys WRT54GS router. It set itself up right way, set all the other 6 devices in the house up right away, encrypted itself, got everything on line and was done in about 30 minutes. Wow, what a difference. It's straight G but N is still up in the air as far as permanent format anyhow.
Don't buy the WRT310N it's all trouble.
Customer Review: Great with minor design flaw Summary: 4 Stars
I am a Network Administrator so I can tell you I have vast experience with routers, switches...etc. This router is excellent and has fantastic benchmark results in both speed and distance. However I have compared it with its lower end cousins and found that though they do not have the potential of the WRT310N, they also do not have heating issues as this model does. I took apart both routers and found that the root of the issue is the space for ventilation within the device for its electronic components, The shell is the same practically but far more is compressed within the WRT310N.
After experimenting with this router I found that the best solution for the heat issue is to not place it flat on its belly as most people would assume is the best position, but rather attach it to the wall with the available screw holes on its underbelly with the rear of the router facing up. In this position I have ran her with an Xbox360, PS3 and my computer all running together with no heat issues for days. As long as you have her in a upright position like so, she is a marvel of a router for the price. I highly recommend but I do insist that Linksys address the issue in future additions.
Customer Review: WRT310N Great N radio for a G price Summary: 5 Stars
I have a home network where I had been using 2 WRT54GL routers - one as an Access Point (AP) and one as a Repeater bridge (RB). I had 5 computers connected to the bridge, 4 other wireless G devices, 2 VoiP adapters and a Roku Music bridge. My ISP increased my DL speed to 30Mbps and I was not able to get this speed over the G wireless - which was maxing out around 14Mbps.
I bought 2 of the WRT310N's - setup in the same configuration where the AP was mixed mode and the RB was G only. The link gives me rock solid 130Mbps. I am still playing with the 40Mhz options but it does not appear as stable - still a learning curve for me.
After instant savings - I paid $73 each for these here on amazon.
A couple notes - First this device has a heat issue due to poor ventilation. My solution was to raise the unit 1 inch with the cardboard tube from a roll of tape. No more overheating. Second, this being a Linux based device, I upgraded the firmware to DD-WRT ([...]). I get many usefule features including a VPN server allowing me to securly access my home network, better QoS settings, SNMP, remote logging and a ton of other stuff
Customer Review: Come on Linksys, your better than this. Summary: 2 Stars
I own this router. I bought it for the speed. It is fast and easy to initially set up, however don't plan on changing settings. I tried to change my hex keys so people that had them couldn't connect any longer, when I did it would not save the settings. I tried everything, including calling red dot India, aka Linksys tech support. If you are able to make out what the "tech" is saying (good luck), they are going to tell you to reset it (DUH, MORON). When that doesn't work they are going to try to SELL you tech support. SELL me tech support?!?!?!?! Are you kidding? I paid for your product and it doesn't work right, FIX IT! It was not a hardware problem, but they refused to correct the software or firmware problem. I reset it to factory settings and now can't enable security. I can now connect, but my network which I do personal and business banking from is not secure. Thanks Linksys. I can't change security settings, I can't even change the time zone settings. What a disappointment. Save your money, buy something else and don't pay for the product twice. Once to get it home and a second to get some tech in India stealing our jobs to make it work right.
Customer Review: Works great - under these conditions Summary: 5 Stars
Have used this router for about a week now. I was hesitant after reading the reviews about constant disconnects and overheating. But I decided to give it a try, as I suspected that the problems were due mainly to:
1) Improper placement
2) Buggy software
I set it up the following way to address these concerns:
1) I immediately wall mounted it with the ports pointing up and with some room for ventilation.
2) I never touched the Linksys CD. Immediately on installation, I logged into the router ([...]), and manually set it up the way I wanted. This takes a little bit of saavy, but the settings are straightforward and the help screens are pretty good.
After a week of constantly feeling the thing, it gets a little warm, but never hot. Clearly placement is everything. Also, I have not had 1 disconnect. Good signal all over the house, and plays well with XP, Vista, and MacOSX. Plenty fast. I am very satisfied overall, and this is a great successor for me over the WRT54GL. I previously used DDWRT on that router, but I am not sure if I am going to install it here. If it aint broke...
