Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit RouterCustomer Review: Overheating still a problem Summary: 1 Stars
Contrary to some other customer reviews, the heat issues with the WRT310N have not been addressed. See the nice shiny smooth surface of the router? That's a hard plastic shell that doesn't let air circulate.
This model shares a fundamental design flaw with other consumer gigabit routers: at ten times the speed of 100-megabit routers, gigabit switch chips generate considerably more heat. Yet Linksys and other manufacturers have inexplicably designed the current generation of routers with fewer air vents.
I'm sure the WRT310N works just fine in ideal conditions, standing upright on a desk or table, or mounted to a wall, in a well-ventilated room. But try to tuck it out of sight on a shelf with other heat-generating components, and watch your downloads grind to a halt several times a day, requiring constant reboots.
That was my experience with the WRT310N as well as the D-Link DIR-655. In frustration I gave up on the idea of a single box solution for gigabit wired and wireless networking, instead opting for a pair of components: the tried-and-true 100-megabit WRT54G, along with a super-cheap 6-port gigabit switch. In total they probably generate even more heat than the WRT310N, but with proper airflow and separation from the heat-spewing gigabit switch, the router stays cool and happy even in my less-than-ideal environment. Both have been running for weeks without a hitch.
Customer Review: this is total junk Summary: 1 Stars
I have LinkSys WRT54G and works fine, but I like to have wireless_N and Gigabit. So, I bought this junk a year ago on black Friday. From the beginning, the connection dropped several times every hour and the unit is very hot. I read some review and stand the router up, but it does not help. I also tried upgrading firmware. No use. My computer connect to the router through wire and it works fine. After almost one year, the wireless connection issue got so bad that all my kids and my wife are asking me to fix the problem because it only last several minutes and they have to reconnect again and again. The wired connection of my computer also start to have connection issue. I finally switch back to WRT54g, everything back to normal, and lose connection is totally gone. Check the internet to see how much trouble this model has. Forget to solve the heat issue by standing the unit up, put something to elevate it, or add heat conducting material underneath. I tried all that. It will not solve the heat issue and lose connection. They are all something people wish to could work and eventually the unit just stop working.
I used to have such a good impression of LinkSys because of WRT54G. Now, it is totally ruined. I believe the company is producing junk and tried to make money out of it. I am sill looking wireless N Gigabit router, but will never buy LinkSys.
Customer Review: Works great on the PC and Mac laptops Summary: 4 Stars
I went from my trusty old 11b Linksys router to an N with no stop at G. This is a very nice modem. I installed it with my PC laptop and the installation wizard was a breeze. When I opened my iBook, my new SSID was right there under the AirPort icon. The only problem is AirPort disconnects from the Internet when I'm on my cordless phone. This doesn't happen with the PC and it never happened with the old 11b router.
Neither of my laptops is N, so I got the adapter.Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter, WUSB600N Once again, installation was a snap on the PC. Watching video streams is awesome. Thanks to the insanelymac.com forums, I was able to download the correct driver for the Mac and with some trial and error, I got the adapter to connect.
I'm very pleased with the router and adapter purchases. Delivery was fast. The prices were considerably less than those at Sam's. The router is warm -- not hot. Both laptops get considerably hotter. The only reason I gave the router a 4 rather than a 5 is the lack of support from Linksys for its Mac users. The driver for the adapter should have been included for a Mac, but it's not even mentioned on the Linksys website. I knew better than to call technical support!
Customer Review: Hits it outa the park! Summary: 5 Stars
My Wireless G quit working. I didn't want to mess with it anymore. So I hopped down to Office Max and bought this router. I intended to upgrade in the future anyway so this was my excuse.
Since I'm used to Linksys and also wireless, I figured this would not be much to install. I was right. It installed simply. I do suggest you put the CD in first and follow all the little rules. Even though you may know a lot about these things.
There is one mistake in the setup instructions. It tells you to put the cable from your PC into the Internet on the router. Wrong. The cable modem cable goes there. But you knew that. Right?
I also bought a wireless N adapter for my laptop, even though it's a wireless G machine. I'm glad I did. It works just great.
The speed between computers is just unreal! And the range is fantastic. I even feel that the Internet is faster. Oh, I know a router can't make the Internet faster. But it seems like it to me.
The speed difference between G and N is just out of this world. I'm very pleased with the router. Keep in mind, I just bought it today. So I may post an update.
But going from 57mbps to 135mbps is a real jump in speed. If you're ready to upgrade, go for this. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: Works great together with WRT54G Summary: 5 Stars
I had intermittent wireless connection issues with WRT54G after I moved to my new house. This happened when I used wireless connection from my family room which is on ground floor and the room with WRT54G is on the upper floor and the opposite corner of the house. The house has wired network too. I replaced WRT54G with WRT310N on the upper floor. I am using WRT54G in my family room as a wireless access point. Wireless connectivity is great throughout the house now. I used the following instructions found on the web:
1. Change the IP address of the 2nd router to 192.168.1.2. The idea
is to not duplicate the IP address of the first router.
2. Optionally set the SSID and encryption keys to the same on both
routers.
3. Ignore the WAN port. The WAN port is not used (on the 2nd router).
4. Turn OFF the DHCP server on the 2nd router.
5. Connect a cable between one LAN port on the first router, to a LAN
port on the 2nd router.

I have both routers working for months and never had to reboot them. No overheating issues as some reviewers have claimed.
