Customer Review: Shockingly bad router
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this router because my old one just didn't reach very far in my house. This hadn't been a problem before but I got a new Playstation that I wanted to reach in our living room.

Within no time after hooking this up, it started just disconnecting constantly - in fact literally as I just typed the first paragraph of this review, it disconnected for no reason and I'm soft resetting it now.

I phone Linksys to see what was up and the very first thing they said after getting the model name and serial number was that in order to do much I would have to pay some nine ninety five fee to get this direct connection software from them where they connect directly to my computer and I watch them fix it. I said no thanks, I'm returning this if I can't fix it for free, and the lady just kind of rambled about how I really should pay the ten bucks but she'd see what she could do.

Well what she could do was just to spend about 2 minutes getting me to click "clone MAC address" inside the admin screen for the product, and that was it, it didn't do anything and she just whined how they couldn't do anything without me purchasing the ten dollar package. Unbelievable.

I have purchased Linksys stuff in the past with no problem and received support from them over the phone but I guess that was a couple of years ago and these days they just are not doing support unless you pay.

Reading over all these reviews and others on the web, it's pretty clear that this product is just a bigtime dud, and it's a shame, I really thought Linksys was a leading brand and would be a safe purchase, but nope, it's a piece of junk.

Customer Review: Great router, so far
Summary: 5 Stars

Found my NetGear router dead (unsurprising after reading forums and reviews of the model I had), so I replaced it with this one. It was very easy to setup and it supports WMM (wireless multimedia) and QoS which was important to me since I have the T-Mobile Blackberry Curve that can do calls over WiFi. I did not install any software and had no problem getting this thing to work with my Macs and PCs -- however, I have had several LinkSys routers in the past, which made knowing how to set this up without installing software pretty easy.

Beware, what another reviewer said about this router not being a "true N specification". It is fully compliant with the latest draft standards. It uses MIMO technology (40MHz wide bandwidth), and operates in both the 2.4GHz and 5.2GHz spectrums. And it is true gigabit ethernet for wired devices (the spec sheet does state gigabit, several times actually. I checked the sheet, and I'm getting gigabit throughput between my two wired machines plugged into the router. It's also important to realize that gigabit is way faster than even the fastest DSL or cable modem, so that measure of speed is only relevant when communicating between 2 computers that are both plugged into this router via an Ethernet cable.) Buying this won't get you a faster connection to the internet.

UPDATE: This route is STILL working great for me. I've had it for 18 months now and not one hiccup. Most Linksys routers I've bought in the past would have died by now (for no apparent reason), but this one is still going strong. Works great with my MacBook, iPhone, and PCs.

Customer Review: Multiple Router Reboots Required
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had the WRT310N for several months now. I am already on my 2nd unit having replaced the original one under warranty within 6 weeks. The problems with both are the same.

At random intervals, the router's web configuration is inaccessible to any device on the network. The router will respond to a ping request for a period of time. Eventually pinging to the router fails. When that happens, Only those systems that have static IP's can communicate with one another. Anything with a dynamic IP, either wired or wireless is unable to communicate with any other device.

As I stated above, I am currently using a warranty replacement which is exhibiting the same problems as the unit I purchased originally. Linksys tech support is essentially a joke but I've known that a long time. Their "analysts" do nothing more than read scripts that guide you through steps I've done several times before calling them. I am sure they can help someone who is much less technically inclined but the only thing they can do is provide me with a warranty replacement.

After reading some posts here and in the Linksys message boards, I see I am not alone with this problem. Upgrading the firmware was of no help either. I might not mind it as much if the router was not in a room in my basement where I rarely spend time. Sadly it looks as though I will have to invest in another device unless Linksys can find a cause and a solution first, the prospects for which I have very little hope.

Customer Review: another way to solve heat issue
Summary: 4 Stars

I needed to replace my five year old G router made by D-Link. My research had indicated this Linksys was a great router but sometimes had heat issues.

I got mine about a week ago. The setup program made installation incredibly easy. It worked fine from the get-go, very fast and 200 feet of indoor range, and almost 300 feet into my back yard.

But it did run hot. It wasn't close to skin burning temperatures, but the bottom seemed much hotter than desirable for long term reliability.

I had read the solution of mounting the router vertically, but that wasn't practical for my installation. So instead, first as a test, I velcroed on a 2 inch leg to the rear portion of the bottom (the serial number plate) being careful not to block any ventilation holes. With the leg attached the router is now at a 45 degree angle, similar to the picture on the box. (The leg is a 1 inch diameter dowel, painted black.)

It worked! The router is running MUCH cooler now, even cooler than my old one. The face of the router is barely warmer than ambient, and the back is now only slightly warmer than the face.

Since it's pictured this way on the box, I wonder if at some point they thought it needed that leg. I rated this product only four stars because, despite fantastic performance, nice looks and a good price, a perfect product would not need any modifications. Of course, I'll never know if it actually needed this modification, but I do feel better now.

Customer Review: Useless
Summary: 1 Stars

When I decided to buy a new wireless router, I told myself that Linksys couldn't be a bad choice, as it's a Cisco company. I wanted to avoid D-Link, because I had problems with a wifi usb adapter in the past.

So, one year ago I bought the wrt310n (first version), and installed everything. The wired network was working fine and fast, thanks to the 4 Gigabit ports. At that time I didn't enable the wireless network, because I just had moved to a new house, and all my computers were in the same room. The only problem I noticed, is that the router just stopped working from time to time, when doing some intensive downloading. Perhaps this was related with overheating, but as I'm not a big downloader, this wasn't very annoying.

Some months ago, I tried to stream movies to my Xbox 360 trough the wireless network. I didn't work. After many sleepless nights (I'm a very stuborn person) trying every possible configuration, I had to surrender.

A week ago, I bough a netbook for my wife, and I noticed that the wifi connection droped everytime I tried to transfer huge files. I decided to check with another computer, and I found the same problem. After two nights trying many configurations, I decided to buy a new router.

I installed the Belkin N1 Vision (Version 2000), and everything worked perfectly right out of the box, il less than 10 mn.

Perhaps I just got bad luck, but buying that WRT310n was with no doubt a waste of time and money.
