Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router

Customer Review: Extremely poor range
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product for a customer of mine, primarily for the advertised increase in range, not the increase in speed. My customer wanted to place a laptop on the first floor of her house, about 30 feet or so from the router on the 2nd floor. I installed Linksys's pre-N adapter (WPC300N) in the laptop, believing the match with their pre-N router would improve the results.

Like most other reviewers here, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. The received signal was always "Low" or "Very Low," and I managed to sustain a connection for only 10 minutes at a time. As a point of comparison, my US Robotics 802.11g router, which I picked up for 1/9th the cost, gets about 4 times the range of the Linksys!

Linksys is destroying its reputation, and breaking faith with its customers, by releasing products like this one, apparently without even minimal testing. Just a guess on my part, but I think this is what happens when the sales and marketing folks rule and the technicians are kept on short leashes.

Customer Review: Up and running in 15 minutes
Summary: 4 Stars

At first, I was really worried about buying this router as I first read the other reviews. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine, who is quite technical. I decided to throw caution to the wind and purchase it because I have a large home, and quite a large yard and wanted to extend my signal range to use my laptop outside. I have a mix of Apple machines and Windows machines in the house (Apple G4 Laptop, iMac, Gateway Laptop and Sony Vaio).

Upon receipt I merely opened the box, followed the instructions and within 15 minutes I was up and running with all machines working wirelessly as well as via ethernet cable. The Macs merely took me having to first connect the ethernet cable to them, establish an internet connection and then switch on "airport". That was it.

I did nothing clever, nothing special, and it worked just fine. Not sure if I am "an exception" to the rule, but thought it was appropriate for me to comment as I never had a single problem getting the router to work perfectly.

Customer Review: Not That Bad If you Know what your doing
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had this router since after a few months when it came out and its still working. You just have to know how to use it and linksys doesnt tell you at all. If you aren't getting gigabyte speeds wired, then the issue is most likely your cable pinouts are not correct or you dont have a gigabyte NIC. Wireless isn't that great for distance but when set up to use both bands on a PC/Laptop with a dual band card, speeds of over 100mbs. The storage link took me some time to figure out, but if you manage to get it connected which can be tricky but isnt impossible, the biggest issue with keeping it connected is a storage device that has power save options enabled. If the storage device shuts off, then you have to remove all instances of it on the routers memory and get it reconnected as you would for the first time. Thats why if you turn off you power save options, it works great. The newer version of this router seems to be much better, but 3 years and running with this one and no dead in the water issues yet.

Customer Review: Reliable and hassle free so far...
Summary: 4 Stars

I must've spent over 3 weeks in hopes to find a simple router that works.
When I say "a simple router that works", I just mean that, nothing more.

I'd tried Belkin, Netgear before I got my hands on this Linksys router.
One of the reviewers said that you should try the Netgear gigabit edition before you start whinning about this Linksys. You know what? I just couldn't agree more with that comment.

When I had the Netgear, I was having to reset it about 10 times a day to establish a connection which usually lasted about 30 minutes.

I'd gotten used to getting ready to run to where the router is so that I can reset it. Well, I don't see myself doing that anymore.

I gave it only 4 stars even though I am 110% satisfied with the product because I've had it barely over a week. Who knows what would happen in the next 3~4 months...
If nothing disappointing happens during that time, I'd come back and give it 5 stars.... no questions asked!!!

Customer Review: not even good as a paper weight
Summary: 1 Stars

i used to be a avid Linksys supporter. as i sit here i am connected through an old Linksys BEFSR41 dsl router (pre-Cisco) that still works flawlessly. hell, i could throw it off my roof and it would still work. but what the hell happened to Linksys now that Cisco has it? holy mother of god, this thing is a righteous POS! as almost every other person on here giving it one star, i can also attest, the thing just doesn't work. did everyone from Linksys leave after the merger and only leave the guys that make the cases? seriously, is there a flippin' radio in the thing? it has some really fancy schmancy antennas, but are they actually hooked up to anything? to be honest, i will hate having to learn an entirely new config console, but what-the-hell, the time i spent trying to get this thing to work will never come again. thank you Linksys for wasting a good two days of my life. I will never buy another Linksys product, after this latest fiasco with yet another Linksys/Cisco product that sucks!
