Customer Review: Would not recommend
Summary: 3 Stars

If you purchase this refurbished product, make sure it still has its warranty!! I just bought a linksys wrt160n refurb and Amazon sent it to me with a warranty that had expired in October of last year. I was having a lot of trouble getting this product working correctly with my desktop pc and my mac book pro and so when I called Linksys (i actually had to ask a friend for the tech # because it was not listed in any of the paper work that came with the product) the 1st man I spoke to said that this specific product was out of warranty and that to help me at all I would have to pay over 40 dollars. So, as you can imagine I was super frustrated. Although it all ended up working out though because I called linksys again, spoke to another man and convinced him to help me. He did, up to a point and then made up some lame excuse that he had to check something in the "lab" and said goodbye. I was then able to figure out how to fix my other problems by myself. so, just to warn you, if you are looking for a hassle free router...THIS IS NOT IT!! I would advise you to spend a little more money and go with one that has a warranty..or better yet one that you don't even need a linksys tech guy to help you get working.

Customer Review: Stopped Working After 11 Months
Summary: 2 Stars

Received v3. I installed it right out of the box, but it kept dropping the wireless signal. So I then did the firmware upgrade via the linksys website. After that, everything worked excellent. I did not install the DD WRT firmware.

Then, 11 months later, my computer that is hardwired to the router was not getting an internet connection. I plugged my modem directly to this computer (bypassing the router) and the internet worked fine. So the problem was the linksys router.

I'm going to try the DD WRT firmware this week to see if that fixes the problem and will update this post.

Bottom line is that with a mass consumer product like this you shouldn't have to be a network professional or techie or have to go through software upgrades at inception to be able to use this product, even a refurbished product. Shame on Cisco for not being upfront about the firmware issues in their item description.

Btw, do not call Cisco / Linksys customer service, it is a waste of your time and will leave you more frustrated, just return it if you can. Booo Cisco...

4/11/11 update: Installed the dd-wrt firmware and the router does not work. i give up...

Customer Review: 5 stars for DDWRT, not the router!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Now I have proven to myself that those reviews about the utmost necessity of DDWRT firmware upgrade is the absolute truth and nothing but the truth. Without it, this router is a junk. The upgrade process itself is easy, the most difficult part actually is to make this router connect to the internet in the first place(without DDWRT) so you can do the upgrade. In my case, it took me three gruelling late night sessions trying to have an internet connection stable enough to go through the upgrade process. My first two sessions, I was able to achieve a connection(after countless attempts)that got me halfway through the process only to disconnect when it's almost done. Eventually, thru sheer perseverance and some miracle, I got a connection that was barely stable to sustain the three-minute upgrade process. Once I realized that the upgrade was successful, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel and I knew that that was the beginning of the end of my miseries. It's flawless. It's good that Linksys was selling garbage for the price of garbage, it's a grace from heaven that DDWRT is turning garbage to gold - for free.

Here's the link to the upgrade procedure: [...]. Good luck!

Customer Review: Great once you get it set up
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this refurbished router (v3) and installed DD-WRT right out of the box. I had never done any open source firmware installation and I am not a computer scientist. The installation process is very particular. If you purchase this router and decide to use the DD-WRT firmware, make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY as they are shown. If you don't, the process will become a pain. Fortunately, the instructions are intended for someone that has no background or experience in the upgrading process.

Once the firmware was installed, the signal strength was great on all my devices (PS3, netbook w/ Windows 7, and BlackBerry) except for one laptop that was running Vista. It would not pick up the signal consistently and eventually stopped connecting the Internet nor the router at all. After a lot of headache and trial and error, I updated the wireless adapter driver software on the Vista laptop and have not had a problem since. I hadn't seen any mention of this in any of the comments or forums.

Now that the setup and troubleshooting is over, I have nothing but great things to say about the router. It's definitely worth a little hassle up front.

Customer Review: A fantastic router at a great price. Buy Refurbished and save $$$

Linksys has come a long way. I have been using their routers exclusively since the Wireless B protocol. I decided to update my Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router with this one to include the N band and upgrade looks and functionality. I had it set up in 10 minutes and actually did it through the IP address provided by Linksys for settings instead of using the CD to set it up. This was a comfortable way to upgrade for me since I had a Linksys product I was replacing.

This is a great little router, looks great and WORKS like a charm. The range on it is very good and in my 2300 square ft. home provides access from every corner. The router also provides access to my neighbor (also though I have WEP enabled). The range is amazing.

I've owned about 4 Linksys routers since about '97. They are the only ones I buy. Each time I buy one, they get easier and easier to configure.

Grab this bargain before they are all gone. If you care about the product and could care less about more plain box packaging, this is one great deal.
