Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT160N-RM Refurbished Wireless-N Router

Customer Review: Piece of Garbage
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this router to replace an older WRT54G router that I was using. I regret buying this router. It's decent if your using WIRED connections and doing basic web surfing, but if your trying to use wireless (especially wireless N) or you play online games or download then forget it.

First of all, the wireless is shotty at best. If you're able to actually connect then kudos, but prepare for horribly slow wifi speeds. Like.. Dialup speeds. I have cable internet, 23MBPS down by 3MBPS up, so I am not dealing with SLOW wifi. Also I have used the wifi on my old WRT54G and get pretty fast speeds for wifi. This router is impossible to get working properly.

Also, be prepared to reset the router 2-4 times daily if you have moderate internet traffic.

I've called Linksys tech support, they have put me through several configurations, none of which worked. Their result was to hang up on me. Happened three times in a row.

I've tried DD-WRT on this router as well. Worked nicely for about a day, then presented the same old issues as before.

End result: think twice about buying this P.O.S. excuse for a router. I used to be a big Linksys fan, but lately with all the flop router's they have been throwing out there... I am beginning to reconsider.

Customer Review: Not as advertised!

I purchased the Linksys WRT160N-RM Refurbished Wireless-N Router, because of the GREAT price, and the fact that I have been using a Linksys WRT54G for several years now without incident. Other than periodically power-cycling my older router, it always worked great.

The WRT160N looks great; lights up nicely, has a great set-up menu for novice users, and quickly connects to cable modem and LAN. I left the default settings, since I have mixed wireless devices in my house (some N, mostly G, some B even) and it shows MIXED by default.

At NO POINT was I ever able to change the settings to acquire an N signal; only G or B. I changed the settings to N (wide-band)only even to test the two N devices in my home (Thinkpad laptops), and neither was able to connect, though they could "see" the N band. When I left the router on MIXED, I was able to connect to G or B, but never N.

Perhaps my expectations aren't educated enough; I was hoping for a router that could simultaneously support multiple devices on multiple bands, since N is broadcast on a different frequency than B/G. I might even have kept it if I could have gotten an N device to connect at all.

If anyone has a suggestion for an N router that supports all band simultaneously, please let me know!

Customer Review: Refurb isn't supposed to mean broken right? Wait ... maybe thats why it was refurb in the first place

This did not work for me ... period. I went through the guided setup initially. Connected my internet connection to the router and my laptop (wired) to one of the LAN ports. Guided setup could not detect the router but my internet through the laptop was functional - so I quit the guided setup. I ran a speed test and I was getting 20Mbps download - which is what I was expecting (and the reason for my moving to this unit - my 8-year old Netgear MR814 was cutting my download speed down to 3Mbps). Smooth so far. Now onto the wireless part. I disconnected the wired part of my laptop and checked if the linksys router was visible with the SSID I assigned it - NOPE, no sign of it. I changed some parameters on the router per some linksys forum recommendations - no change. Occasionally I would see the wireless network from the linksys (1 in 50 refreshes on my laptop) but it would disappear as soon as I would try connecting to it. I spent 2 hours of my time trying to fix this - went through Linksys' Easy advisor, forum recommendations etc - before I realized its just plain broken. For a wireless router, not being able to work wirelessly is IMO a pretty big negative. Thumbs down Linksys. Well back to my old Netgear for now and my quest for a new router continues.h

Customer Review: Looks gorgeous, Mac software included, but beware!
Summary: 1 Stars

I was impressed with the gorgeous v.3 refurb unit that arrived with a CD that included Mac software for setup, but hours later...I am done with a router that is purely a pain!

It was time to replace a failing old D-Link, and another reviewer had provided superb directions for flashing the unit if need be. The price of the refurb unit was great, too. Straight out of the box, it was the usual easy Mac setup, just plug it in and choose the new Airport link. But I wanted better security, and that's where the pain started. The web interface was clunkier than my 8-year old D-Link, and dind't include the features I needed, so I tried the included CD. It made a mess of my System Preferences/Network (without helping at all with the router), and I had to restore those settings before my old router could be reconnected.

This morning I spent another two hours with this shiny black box and its possible settings, but it still will not play nicely with a computer network that I know to be stable. If it takes an IT degree to install a router, I'm not impressed with product development over the past decade. I'm still looking for a replacement, and hope to find a better product, even if it costs a bit more.

Customer Review: Default settings need tweaking
Summary: 4 Stars

The intial 802.11g throughput wireless speed from my ethernet wired desktop pc to my 802.11g wireless laptop was very slow. After a live chat session with Linksys Support & changing a few settings, the throughput went from 11.78 Mbps to 23.34 Mbps, which realistically is about the maximum actual usable 802.11g throughput. This test was performed with a 470MB file copy from the desktop to the laptop. I do not know what the 802.11n throughput speed is because I currently do not have a 802.11n capable laptop adapter.

The setting that I changed were:

Under Wireless Tab, Basic Wirelss Settings Tab
Select Manual Wireless Configuration View
Set the channel to 11

Under Wireless Tab, Wireless Security Tab
Changed Security Mode to WPA2 Personal
Changed Encryption to AES (NOT TKIP or AES)

To access the router setup page & get into these settings, type 192.168.1.1 into the Internet Explorer address bar & hit enter. Now enter your user name & password which you should have already setup.

If you are unsure of what you are doing, it would be better to use Linksys Support (live chat) or to seek out some other form of professional advice.
