Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook AdapterCustomer Review: Difficult to install in Win98SE Summary: 4 Stars
There are several Hardware Versions for this adapter, shown on the back of the device. Depending on this version, one goes to Linksys/Cisco and downloads the appropriate driver/utility (if no CD). I intentionally found an older hardware version 3.0 as this was listed as compatible with Windows 98. Called Cisco/Linksys Tech Support and they said even the newest version 7 would work with Win98SE. Linksys needs to show a Windows 98 tab on the WPC54G Support page. It only shows XP and higher, even on the newer packages.
I'm accustomed to Linksys having different hardware drivers along with their Wireless Monitor. All of these different versions are confusing! Why doesn't Linksys streamline their Wireless Monitor software to begin with? There must be a different version for every product they make. What's wrong with a simple Download link, then select the Operating System, for a universal application?
Linksys monitoring software is finicky. Sometimes difficult to install. This time was no different. I finally got it to work by installing in SAFEMODE in Win98SE. Why hasn't Linksys added this solution to the WPC54G Support page??? Opening a trouble ticket with tech support did not help.
Companies now ignore older versions of Windows. Guess no one wants to be bothered with "old Windows" calls. Would it be too much to ask for Cisco to add Windows 98 info to this product?
Customer Review: Big story.....finally got it to work!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
Spanish is my main language, so forgive my english typing mistakes.
I received my WPC54G and tried to install on my Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP Professional with no success. The software installed correctly but the card wouldn't be recognized by the computer. The computer stills searching for the drivers and never found them. I tried with the software CD, downloading from the internet and nothing. I called Linksys and finally they told me that maybe the card was defective and I got to return it.
I have to say that Amazon send another card right away and I received it a few days after.
This time, the software wouldn't install, don't know why so I just put the card into my computer and let Windows install it. Finally it worked but I'm not using the original software from Linksys.
Had a little problem tought. I had intermitent connection. Every five minutes or so, the card disconnected and connected again. Linksys support told me to try a different channel on the router (1, 6 or 11) but that didn't help. Because I didn't have anything to lose, I search at Netgear's support and I found that Windows XP SP 1 had a problem and I have to disable the IEEE 802.1X authentication option in the Wireless Network properties. It really helped!!!!
After all that, the card is working fine. I rate the card with 4 stars for all that previus effort to get it to work.
Customer Review: Excellent range. New security features. Easy set up Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this along with the Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows XP. The setup was easy using the included instructions and Windows Zero Wireless Configuration. New drivers (ver3.20.21.0) are available from Linksys. The range is excellent in my house, at about 100feet through 1 wall the signal strength is good at 48Kbps. Using it outside I can connect at 11Kbps at about 200 ft from the house. The provided instructions are horrible for configuring security other than WEP 128 for WIndows XP. Linksys supports the newer more secure WPA protocol and I highly recommend using it since WEP 128 is almost useless to prevent specific attacks against your network. You should use WPA-PSK (Pre-Shared Key) with TKIP encryption on the router and on the properties of the wireless card. Though Linksys has supported WPA since May you won't find anything about how to configure it on the card and router in their knowledge base. The Key can be any letter, number and a few symbols from 8-63 characters long. You can also set the Group Key renewal 0-99,999 sec. I set it to 0. Under the IEEE 802.1x authentication set the EAP type to PEAP and uncheck boxes for "Authenticate as computer when information is available" and "Authenticate as guest..." unless you use these features. Also, change the SSID and don't broadcast it and use MAC filtering to lockdown your network.
Customer Review: Wireless and Frustrated Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the WPC54G wireless adapter, WRT54G Router and the BEFCMU10 cabel modem (all Linksys products) through Amazon. The units were installed by the Cable Company tech the day we moved into our new residence. I had been using the wireless equipment of a friend and using AOL 9.0 without a problem. When the new installation was complete, I got an immediate error message (A required .DLL file, MPRAPI.DLL was not found) this prevents me from accessing my AOL account. I now get this error message every startup. AOL says its a Windows problem, my computer mfg. said he did a search and found that there was a problem between AOL 9.0 and Linksys and I should be able to get a patch from thier site. I had no luck on the site and no luck with their live chat option (disconnected). I called linksys technical line for help. I spent hours on the phone with a very patient and pleasent rep. The end of the story is she could not get my problem resolved and said that it was an AOL problem. I explained that this same computer with the same software was used on another wireless system without a problem. I am now after 12 days and many hours of effort in a catch 22 situation with everone pointing fingers at someone else. Someone sent in a review about this unit not working with a TI card bus controller. That is what my computer has.
Customer Review: Linksys Wireless 54g PC Card does not work with HP and XP Summary: 1 Stars
Bought the linksys WPC54G wireless PC card for my HP pavilion ze4125 (AMD Athlon) running Windows XP with Service Pack 1a. Tried to install the Card as per instructions that came in the box, locks up my laptop everytime. The instructions tell to you turn off your laptop, insert the card, and XP should find new hardware. XP does find the Card and prompts you to insert the CD-ROM that has the drivers on it. It starts to copy over the drivers and then hangs. The only way to unfreeze your laptop is to pop the card out. If you reboot your laptop with the card in, it will sometimes hang at the initial windows screen (again, you will need to pop the card out to continue). I tried removing the drivers and installing from the CD-ROM instead, same problem. Every time you pop the card in, after you've installed the drivers, the laptop will hang (actually, the laptop is running - but the CPU usage is at 100% so everything is at a crawl). I also downloaded the latest drivers from the linksys website and searched the hp website for help. In addition I called the linksys help line and they said they never heard of this - but I've been seeing alot of similiar reviews for this card. If you are in the same situation that I am in, I suggest you try another card. Linksys obviously doesn't work with all laptops.
