Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI AdapterCustomer Review: How Can They Sell This? Summary: 1 Stars
This is my second try at installing a Linksys wireless PCI card in my Win2000 computer. I returned the first one to LinkSys because it locked up my computer during boot. The one they sent as a replacement gets through boot but fails to start (Device Manager troubleshoot error code 10, "Device won't start"). The only reason I rate it 1 star is because there's no lower selection -- if I could give this product ZERO STARS, I would. (Actually, I don't feel too bad about the 1 star ... at least they sent me a replacement.) I should have heeded the reviews here regarding this product, but I felt constructing a wireless network using only the products from a single manufacturer would yield the least number of interface and connection problems. Wrong-o.Having two LinkSys PCI cards fail is surprising because I also have their Wireless-G router (WRT54G) installed and running, albeit in wired mode, and it's performing flawlessly. Its predecessor, a wired-only router (BEFSR41), also performed well and without problems. But I'm giving up on this company. My next wireless-g PCI card will be D-LINK, which has much better reviews here at Amazon. Now to find out how to return this lame PCI card and get back as much of my money as I can.
Customer Review: Excellent deal Summary: 5 Stars
Works with windows 7 64 bit
Does not come like the one pictured, product arrived as a low profile card which I think is better since it allows better airflow in your case. The metal pci slot bracket is full height but the card itself is less than half height. I uploaded a picture of the item to see what you are getting. It is the same model except it has been updated. The antenna is adjustable and is removable for those of you wondering. It does not extend.
Installation was easy, just make sure you install the cd software first before you install the card. Cd drivers worked excellent with no problems, windows 7 later suggested I install the newest drivers and they worked flawlessly as well.
Signal strength is better than my laptop. I can find alot more wireless networks in my area than my laptop using this card on my desktop.
Fits in the older "PCI" slots only not the newer "PCIe" or pci express as they are also called so make sure you have one empty "pci" slot before you install.
I recommend this card since Linksys is "The" name brand when it comes to consumer home networks and is an unbeatable deal at the current price of $21.99 .
Customer Review: Excellent signal strength but don't follow the install directions Summary: 4 Stars
Just received new wireless-g pci adapter. Signal strength is excellent for my home application. This computer is located 50' from the router (other end of the house) and it works like a charm. The install had a twist. There are two sets of instructions: one for vista and one for xp. I have xp so followed them carefully (not difficult at all). But, though I had a good signal, I also immediately received an error message. Called Linksys immediately. Got thru in seconds. They asked me to remove the software, turn off the computer, and uninstall the adapter. Then, re-install the adapter and turn the computer on. The computer immediately recognized the adapter but needed drivers. I was instructed to put the software cd in the computer. When I did that the computer automatically found the drivers, loaded them and asked for my WEP info. Once that was entered, it has worked great. So, if you are running xp, do NOT load the software first like the instructions tell you. Install the adapter, turn on the system and then put the cd in for Windows to find your drivers. If you are worried about it, install the adapter and call Linksys first. You'll be working in no time. Enjoy.
Customer Review: A work in progress, I hope Summary: 1 Stars
Like some other reviewers I had a world of problems. The install went fine. However, with the router and the PCI card in separate rooms but at most 20 feet apart, the wireless unit kept losing the signal and dropping the network connection. We have no other computers running, no 2.4G phones, no other nothin' that would have caused interference. Three calls to Linksys yesterday (I can't wait to see the phone bill - the 800 number is a big waste of time so it was on my tick); we changed default settings, channels, upgraded the firmware to the 1.01 version, and finally moved the router and the unit about 1 foot apart. It still kept dropping the connection. The signal strength was always very good or better, and the base PC work fine through the router. The tech finally concluded that the card was faulty, so I'm returning it to Amazon. Now: should I order another one? I hope that the problem is a one-off type faulty card, but I'm suspicious, given some of the other reviews here. Nevertheless, I'll probably go for it because I have got to get this thing running. Hopefully, Linksys will put some people on OT to sort it out if it isn't a card manufacturing problem.
Customer Review: Easy Installation - Don't use the included software Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this because my old Linksys wireless PCI-Adapter didn't support WPA encryption and lucky for me when I start looking for it Amazon had it on a 25.99 deal, which was a steal.
The card works just like you would expect it. Make sure the antenna points up in order to get the most networks, including your home network, to show up. Even if you are new to computers, this card can be easily installed. I recommend that you put connect the card to your motherboard, and when you boot Windows and you see the New Hardware wizard, put the CD that is included in your CD drive and then have the Windows New Hardware Wizard find the "drivers automatically." This way, the wizard pulls it from the CD and you don't have to install the annoying Linksys software.
In case you're wondering what the software does, it simply shows you the strength of your signal, let's you connect to networks, and allows you to disable wireless until next reboot. Windows does all this already, so the software becomes a hassle and unnecessary.
But as I said, the card works just as you would expect it. Nothing more, nothing less.
