Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet BridgeCustomer Review: This simple device saved the day Summary: 5 Stars
Our iMac 20" internal wireless card failed. After working with Apple to get it corrected, they said "sure we can get it fixed for $$$$". Shipping + repair costs got me thinking about other ways to solve this issue. How can I used my wired interface to connect to the mac to my network?
Fortunately, linksys pulled through with the solution. The WET54G did the trick without software to install and very little fuss. The entire setup process took only a few minutes to setup. Using the web interface, I was able to configure the WET54G to talk to my hidden WPA wireless network. After that, there has not been anything to do. When the MAC boots, it has no idea it is talking through a bridge to the internet. The behavior has been seemless.
I recommend this for anyone that has a lone workstation that needs to talk across a reasonable distance to a wireless hub. It is easy to use and works as advertised.
Customer Review: WEP encryption fix Summary: 3 Stars
This product works great except for one huge flaw. The passkey translation to the hex string does not work correctly. This is why I believe so many people are saying it never worked out of the box or it couldn't connect. Its easy to get around and does not affect people not using encryption but it took me 5 hours to figure out. I have version 3.1 of the bridge and 2.15 of the firmware by the way. The way around this is to setup as directed. On the setup screen when you pick the bridge from your list don't click next just click on the name. This will bring you to a web interface. The default user name and password are admin and admin. go to the wireless encryption section and paste in the correct hex key. DO NOT PUT IN PASSPHRASE AND CLICK GENERATE. if you don't have the full hex key you can get your passphrase correctly translated here http://www.rkgage.net/bobby/wep.html. That should do it.
Good luck.
Customer Review: Great Product, but Pricey and Hard to Setup. Summary: 4 Stars
I've read a lot of complaints about this bridge, and I'm glad I didn't listen to them. I've been able to get 1 Mb/s transfer rates through the bridge(I've been transfering large files). The bridge is not in the same room, and the signal has to go through 2 walls at least 50' a way. I think this is an excellent product, although its very pricy. Some of the other brands over much cheaper bridges, however they might not interoperate well with your router. The G bridge was able to give me a much more stable xfer rate than my B bridge was able to. Now for the bad stuff. It is a pain to setup, a lot more painful than the linksys B bridge. Its probably best if you don't use the setup cd and just connect to it via the browser to set it up. It doesn't work real well on a mixed network(g and b). I had to change a couple settings on my router to get in the 1 Mb/s range.
Customer Review: It does just what it claims and does it well! Summary: 5 Stars
I am using this bridge as a wireless bridge from my wired network in one room of the house to connect to my WRT54G wireless router in another room. It works perfectly. I have 1 computer and 2 printers connected to a D-Link DGS-2208 Gigibit Switch which is connected to the WET54G Wireless Bridge which is connected WIRELESSLY to the WRT54G router. That's right, no wired connection between the wired network in one room and the internet which is from the WRT54G router/modem/switch in another part of the house. My wife's laptop connects wirelessly to the home network through the WRT54G and is able to print to either of the two installed printers and we can share files between my computer on the wired network and hers wirelessly through the WET54G and the WRT54G. If you need to connect your wired network to the outside world and don't want to run wires all over the house then this is your answer!
Customer Review: Set-up for X-Box or anything else is tricky. Summary: 3 Stars
I never got the CD-ROM that came with my WET54G to work, recomend it be used as a coaster. Go directly to 192.168.1.226 to configure it. Make sure to keep track of the "X" and "II" switch on the back. I didn't have any problems accessing the WET54G when hooked directly to my PC or to my WRT54G and going to the IP address directly, the Linksys software (on supplied CD-ROM)never did find my WET54G even when hooked directly to my PC. Note: My PC is hard-wired to the WRT54G, always configure the WET54G using wire, even after you have it up and running. Mine now bridges X-Box to the WRT54G and works very well. Also Note: I had to disable all my SECURITY on my WRT54G until I got past the basic configuration. Add security back into your net 1 piece at a time (i.e. SSID broadcast, WEP, MAC filtering, and etc.) until all is up to the level you need it to be.
