Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access PointCustomer Review: Wooks Good - Bad Instructions Summary: 4 Stars
I feel the state of consumer level wireless is one step above gadget level - after a lot of screwing around, it works but I would still prefer to be able to run cable and have a wired connection. That said - I decided to play around with wireless mostly out of curiosity, and since I already had a router and firewall, I decided to just get a WAP instead. I've used Cisco's own WAP's at work, and since they own Linksys now, I decided to give this model a try. Quick review is it works fine for me running my newly wireless home network consisting of 2 computers, a stand-alone 80hr Tivo, and two Xboxes, and a Linksys Wireless Network Camera. It wasn't as simple as taking it out of the box and getting it up and running, mostly thanks to the lousy documentation included with - basically a quick-start guide and a PDF file both of which didn't explain much of anything. But after downloading the latest firmware from the Linksys website, and doing a lot of online research, I did get everything up and running acceptably. Don't forget to turn on one of the methods of encryption - I noticed a lot of my neighbors unknowingly running totally open.
Customer Review: Linksys once again Summary: 5 Stars
I already had a Linksys wired DSL router. I debated over replacing it with a wireless capable router instead; but decided to avoid additional hassles and just do an AP. I knew I wanted to keep with Linksys because of their rep. and because of my current experience with them.
The WAP54G was a breeze to set up. I had it up and running the first time in probably 15-20 minutes (w/ Windows 98). It hooked right up; and I stacked it right ontop of my router.
I had connection to the Internet with my laptop in no time. The range seems to be just fine in my house as I can access from my den, my garage and my back deck with the AP in my hallway office (using mainly full signal strength). I also plan to use my Dell Axim PPC with the AP as well once I get it.
This AP comes with the latest wireless security, WPA. I recommend setting up the security. Elect not to broadcast your SSID and "Enable" your WPA security. It is said that only about 10% of wireless network users have security enabled. Enabling your security will prevent unwanted "ease-droppers" and others from "borrowing" your connection.
Customer Review: Worst Product EVER Summary: 1 Stars
I have never in my life been more disappointed in anything. Even SeaMonkeys were less of a let down.
This product constantly resets itself. But when it resets it can't boot itself up. So you have to walk across your room/house to manually reset the unit. Then and only then will it fully reboot.
When I say constantly reboots, I mean I reset the unit three times in the amount of time it took me to write this review. Tomorrow I'm going to go buy something that actually works, and then I'm going to spend the rest of the day deciding how I'm going to destroy this garbage. I honestly can decide if a grubbing hoe or a hatchet would be a better way to destroy this curse on humanity.
And don't try to tell Linksys about it. There's nowhere to file any kind of complaint. If you call customer service they read you some script with broken English. I will never do business with Linksys (now part of Cisco) EVER AGAIN.
This is the WORST PRODUCT EVER. Don't buy it. You would be better off with 14.4 dialup.
Customer Review: After a few days of headache configuring it, the thing works like a charm Summary: 4 Stars
Setting up the Linksys was a threefold pain, but after wrestling with the configuration I'm consistently getting 54Mb throughout my house. I flip the thing on and forget about it.
The three obstacles in setting up the WAP54G were:
1) The auto-setup program on the included CD continually blew up. My online chat with tech support led nowhere, the chat session dropping about 20 minutes in.
2) My private subnet doesn't include the factory default IP for the Linksys (or most other network devices), so I had to temporarily switch over my PC and router IPs and subnets to connect to the WAP54G's config web server. Note this isn't the fault of Linksys, but food for thought if you have to do a manual configuration from an "unconventional" private subnet.
3) The documentation doesn't give a lot of guidance on setting up WPA2 security for a Windows client. After a great deal of web sleuthing I discovered from Microsoft's site that my XP Pro SP2 notebook required a download to support WPA2.
Customer Review: Avoid Linksys Summary: 1 Stars
I have a lot of Linksys equipment - 4 routers, 2 WRT54G wireless routers, 2 WAP54G access points, and a couple of switches. That collection built up over time, propelled largely by the admonition in Linksys documentation that "Linksys wireless units only communicate with other *Linksys* wireless units". I don't know if that's true, and I came to Amazon today to order a Netgear access point to find out. I have *had* it with Linksys. The wireless equipment works, then it doesn't work. As another reviewer mentioned, it is necessary to reboot the units frequently to get them communicating again. And Linksys support is HORRIBLE. They do respond relatively quickly, but they do not appear to even read the problem reports, sending only canned answers. If you do manage to proceed past that support level, you learn that they know NOTHING about their own equipment. It is extremely frustrating. I know it is going to be expensive, but I am determined to wean my network from Linksys equipment, at least the wireless equipment. I have, simply, had enough!
