I bought this 4-Port Hub first because of its ability to operate without DC power, and second, because of its compact size.
Not only does it operate without DC Power, but it has the option of operating WITH DC power- just order the adapter.
I love this little thing and I'm totally impressed with the speed of its file trasnfer rate. I have my printer AND 80gb USB external hard-drive attached to it and to me-- their appears to be no difference in speed.
Basically... it works just as good as the USB ports that came with my Toshiba Lap Top (2.79 ghz w/ 1gig of Ram).

In today's world, so many of the add-ons for computers are the easy plug and play USB capabilities. I have a scanner, printer, camera, DSL modem, list goes on and on...some of my computers have 4 USB ports, but 2 have only 2 slots. It is a pain to wait to close it on your computers, then unplug, then plug...over and over again, when forced the switch them around. I almost bought this on open market and it was FOUR TIMES this price, so I bought two. This is such a time saver and such a great amazon price.Believe me you won't regret having not to fuss with the USB port shuffle. Great price, too.

The warnings may be justified, but this device delivers exactly what I wanted. The short cord is ideal for my laptop setup. The lack of separate power is an asset, since all my USB devices (mouse, keyboard, printer, camera) can draw power from the USB connection itself. That means no additional power cord to snake through to an outlet. My desk appreciates the small form-factor. And of course it delivers the primary benefit of a hub: the necessity of unplugging just a single connection to get the laptop on the road.I do wish Linksys would market an identical-format hub with USB 2.0 speed.

I recently added a wireless keyboard/mouse unit and needed an extra USB port. I purchased this unit after doing a fair amount of research at CompUSA, BestBuy, CircuitCity, Radio Shack, and numerous online areas. I found the best price here and I trusted the Linksys name. It arrived sooner than I expected so go with the free shipping. The unit snuggly plugs into the USB port and doesn't require additional support. It worked fine for me in the non-powered mode (kinda wish it shipped with power but I don't need it) and the scanner, printer, keyboard/mouse, etc. all seem to work fine.Customer Review: Solved my problem!

I have a notebook computer that I really like but, for some reason, one of the USB ports that I desperately needed stopped working and my local computer nerds could not fix it, recommending that I ship the computer back to the company. For all the trouble that would take, I decided to try ordering a compact hub to save time and money. It worked!
The shipment arrived very fast by ground and now that I have the Lynksys hub there is no need to go to the trouble and expense of repairing my USB port. Everything works perfectly!
