Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys USB200M EtherFast USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter

Customer Review: Nice.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have one of the older USB 1.0 adapters in my computer junk drawer (a collection of adapters, plugs, gender changers, card readers & cables....sounds a bit like a circus side show but it never fails me!) and have found it useful on several occasions, but this 2.0 model is in daily service on a network server. Basically, you can plug your ethernet cable into the adapter and then insert the plug end into any USB receptacle (2.0 or 1.1) on your machine (such as on a laptop or a TIVO, etc.). Its purpose is to make buying and installing an ethernet card unnecessary. It has connection & data transfer LEDs to tell you you've contacted the network, though these are not really necessary. No set up is required either, just plug and go on Windows XP.
As far as I can see, the connection is quite as stable as any hard wired to an internal ethernet card, and as it's a true 2.0-compliant adapter, transfer speeds are awesome. In daily use on our network it has performed flawlessly.

Customer Review: Made the mistake of getting a 2nd one after the 1st one broke...
Summary: 1 Stars

Like the other reviewers before me said, this is a very flimsy & poorly designed product. I've had no problem with the linksys router for my wireless connection so I was optimistic about this adapter. However, it's just not worth the hassel. I had to return the first one I bought after the door broke & the led lights stoped working. NOTE: customer service is HORRIBLE! Maybe the language barrier was just too confusing because the technical support staff (which I assume is located in India - go figure) never seemed to know what to tell me & I would have to repeat myself over & over again to no avail. As it happens, I returned the first adapter to Staples in exchange for a new one & now the problem is that the flimsy metal connecter attached to the laptop is starting to wobble & keeps coming out which causes the entire computer to crash!!!!! What a piece of junk!!! I now see that I should've gotten anything but this adapter again. BUYERS Review: Works Great For Me
Summary: 5 Stars I bought it at Circuit City, where it costs a little more. My ethernet card in my computer has never worked, so I've just connected to my cable modem with a USB cable (the cable modem has both USB and ethernet outputs). Well, we recently got a wireless notebook computer and we wanted a wireless router, but all outputs on the back of most routers are ethernet. I bought this ethernet to USB adapter for my desktop PC to run through the router. No problem at all. The driver was easy to install, and the thing works like a charm - an ethernet cable goes into this, then this goes into a USB port on my computer. I give it five stars.

Also, though the product picture doesn't indicate it, they give you about a 4" or 5" USB cable to run from your computer to the adapter, in case space is tight and you can't run the adapter straight into the back of your computer where it would stick out a couple of inches.

Customer Review: Crashes PC when ip changes
Summary: 2 Stars

Although this unit installed & worked ok, I bought it because I am constantly testing different network equipment on my XP machine & did not want to lose my corporate connection to test them. Unfortunately whenever I either change the network settings or unplug this device my PC totally crashes & restarts. I suppose this bug could be either XP or this kit but either way if I had another chance I would buy a different one. I agree with the other review that the rj45 socket is less than solid & there are some cables which will not hold in place properly. If you only want a permanant Ether connection & don't switch addresses or cables then this works fine. It even comes with a USB extension cable about 5cm long which you will need if your usb connectors are in line rather than side by side because the unit itself is slightly wider than a socket preventing access to the adjacent usb connection.

Customer Review: Handle with care
Summary: 1 Stars

Many of the other reviews sum up the device well. The design weaknesses around the connector take away from the potential performance that the internal hardware may offer. I was using the device on a TiVo Series 2 - when it was connected, it worked great with acceptable transfer speeds. Unfortunately, the connection proved tenuous and during the process of connecting and disconnecting the cable, the clip that holds the RJ-45 connector to the adapter broke off. A makeshift connection using tape was successful for a few minutes in maintaining the connection, but any movement at all disconnected the cable.

I did not receive an extension cable with the adapter, but that would probably help.

I am RMA'ing the broken device with Linksys, but do not recommend this model to others. Linksys customer service has been good regarding the RMA (after a very long hold time).
