Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port SwitchCustomer Review: Not Bad, But Not Perfect Summary: 4 Stars
After reading all the various reviews, both bad and good, I decided to take a chance with the Linksys Print Server -- my aging Netgear PS died on me. The Linksys was easy to physically install; however, I have a small issue that the mounting screw holes on the back are really, really small -- I mounted it on the wall in my home office to get it off of my desk.
I got to the point that I was going to configure the user portion of the PS and it kept failing. I called Linksys they walked me thru how to get it working. I was up and running within 10 minutes of calling them. They were patient and nice to deal with.
After a couple of hours of very heavy use, I am please with the product and the support.
Customer Review: Works - confusing setup Summary: 4 Stars
It's operation is flawless, once it's set up properly. I use this to add ports to my existing router, it's just plug and forget for that.Setting up a printer wasn't so easy, but, after two attempts, it finally installed the network printer driver properly. It might be the way the software automatically loads from the CD - but I was getting errors, until I reinstalled it manually from the disk. But now that it's installed, it handles an HP Officejet v40xi. Since I have a new scanner, the loss of scanning capabilities isn't missed, so bear in mind you won't be able to scan. The print queuing is a little strange. You will get messages if another print job is being fed to the printer, but it does handle the jobs in order.
Customer Review: Works well right out of the box Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using this for about two months now (edit: six months now!) and it is great to be able to print from anywhere in the house. It was easy to set up and I have it running with an ancient HP Laserjet 1160. While I don't need the extra LAN ports it is nice to have them in case I want to add network storage later.
The print server has continued to work even after hard and soft "reboots" of the network. No reconfiguration was necessary. Edit: survived the great power outage of 2008 and came back immediately with no reconfiguration necessary.
Note: this product does not work with Mac OS-X 10.5 (Tiger).
I'd give it five stars if it was a little bit cheaper.
Customer Review: Works but with limits Summary: 3 Stars
Good: I followed the instructions and set this unit up on four computers without problems. Now everyone can print without the printer being hooked up to one computer that has to be on. The unit performs as expected.
Bad: I found out the hard way that this print server will not allow full functionality of a multi-function printer, specifically; it will not allow scanning. This can be worked around by unplugging the usb to the print server and connecting it directly to a computer. But the most annoying aspect of all this is that this little "limitation" is not mentioned anywhere in the setup manual or in information that I could find on the linksys website. Oh well, live and learn.
Customer Review: No issues out of the box... Summary: 5 Stars
I have a wireless router and thought, at first, that I wanted to have a wireless print server. After several failed attempts to configure two different wireless servers (one by Linksys, one by D-Link), I resorted to this 4-port ether/USB printer print server. As it turns out, I think it's the best option. I have a spot now to network an external hard drive, a desktop, etc.
I had none of the printer recognition/compatability issues that others mention. I have an HP 840C InkJet printer that works fine with it. Did Linksys upgrade the device? I don't know. Maybe someone else knows...
It's cheaper than wireless, gives good flexibility, and it's small.
