Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port SwitchCustomer Review: Simplistic Setup, Solid Performance Summary: 5 Stars
I've read the previous reviews and became skeptical on buying this unit. I figured at 40% off with free shipping and a lenient return policy; I'd give it a chance.
Maybe my setup and expectations were easier and lower than others. I have a desktop with XP Professional and a laptop with the same. I wasn't going to attempt to install my HP All-In-One unit to this, as it's a proven fact that units like this don't work well over networked connections. So, I used my HP LaserJet as my test subject.
Installation couldn't have been easier. Using DHCP and updated drivers, this was a breeze. The GUI is foolproof.
The 4-port switch makes this a nice value-added feature, as other devices, like a TiVo, now have a closer network connection to access.
Customer Review: Pretty easy - *updated* - Summary: 2 Stars
We have DSL + wired & wireless router + VOIP, and added the Linksys PSUS4 print server to the mix. Our printer is an HP PSC 1100, an inexpensive multifunction printer. The HP site and Linksys sites did not specifically name this one as compatible but we tried it anyway.
Setup was pretty easy & fast for the family computer professional and the print server performance has been reliable. Setup would have taken longer for the other family members, and not been as easy, as they would have had to read the instructions and figure out how to add the router to the existing configuration, so not quite five stars on this one.
Dec 2010, the print server has failed :-/ I had expected more than 3 years out of it. Reduced from 4 stars to 2, due to this reliability issue.
Customer Review: Couldn't Get It To Work Summary: 2 Stars
I am an IT technician, I followed (most of) the instructions for setup, and couldn't get it to work with my LinkSys router. Then I reset everything and started again, following the instructions exactly, and still couldn't get it to work. Then I called Tech Support, who were very nice and walked me through reseting various things and doing everything again, and it still wouldn't work. Eventually, they came to the conclusion that the unit was faulty.
So, I don't really know how well it works, because it didn't for me. Assuming you get a working unit, it may be fine. But I just gave up and sent it back.
I have a Linysys Wireless router that works great, and their tech support was actually helpful - so that's why it gets at least two stars.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY UNTIL YOU READ THIS Summary: 2 Stars
After calling in a (computer knowledgable) friend to help me install this print server; and spending 6 hours trying to install the Linksys PSUS4, we gave up and called Linksys Service. This unit got two stars for the polite and hard work the service person gave to this situation. After one hour with Mark at Linksys, we were told that this PSUS4 WILL NOT WORK WITH ANY MULTI FUNCTION PRINTER. Linksys gets zero stars for not printing this info on their box, installation papers, or the enclosed CD. Linksys knows this will not work on most multi function printers, the most common today, but will not tell their potential customers. Save yourself a lot of time and DO NOT do what I did, ordered this for a Multi funtion printer. You owe me a beer for this.
Customer Review: Use both connections on your printer if it has two Summary: 5 Stars
Setup is a snap. Works great on the Canon i960. Connect the printer's high speed (top) USB port to the print server. Then, to support both local printing and viewing of the ink cartridge status, connect the printer's low speed USB port directly to the local computer. Add the printer as a "local printer" to the local PC, and as a "network printer" to the remote computers, using the same print driver.
You can also add the "network printer" to the local PC for testing purposes. If you do this, use different printer names to distinguish the connections to the same printer. Set the local printer as the "default" printer on the local computer to maintain a view of the printer status.
I'll bet this works on the Linksys WPS54GU2 too.
