Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch

Customer Review: NO PROBLEM BUT...
Summary: 4 Stars

If you are not very addicted to computers or technology this product may fet on your nerves. I bought three of these devices for my office and do not regret it.

First I had trouble as My printer would go "offline". After many months working with them I can tell you thet the real problem with these devices is that you must try to never turn them off. If you do it. You may have to take a look at the order in which you turn on the devices. First turn off everything, apply power, then turn on the print server and at last the printer ( I have used them with HP 1200 laserjet and Samsung Laser 1210, 1430 and 1450 ) Then you will see that the USB port is green and everything will work.

Another consideration is (not only with this Linksys print servers) try to use LPR printing as it is less "complex" and your printer will always be available.

I never turn them off so maybe that's why I do not have much trouble. Finally I would advice to use it with a recent printer. The ones I have used have worked but you never know really with this continuously evolving technology.

Customer Review: Easiest Install Ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm shocked that this only has an average of 2.5 stars (at the time of posting). I think if you buy a print server from the same company that made your router/switch/etc, you will be fine. I have a Linksys wireless router (don't know the model off hand) and set-up of the PSUS4 was a dream! I installed two laptops (one XP and one Vista) in about 25 minutes, and that was only because I forgot to turn off "Use Printer Offline" on the XP machine, and wasn't logged in as admin on the Vista. Once I got those bugs worked out, it printed flawlessly (and FAST!). The printer is in my closet, and by the time I get there from the kitchen or office, my printout (single pagers thus far) is ready and waiting for me. BTW, I'm printing to an HP OfficeJet 5510 all-in-one, and while I won't be able to scan or fax with this server, who really needs to? I fax from the control panel of the printer, and if I really need to scan something, I'll just connect locally (it IS a laptop, after all).

PS - I'm moderately computer illiterate, so if I can do it, anyone can.

Customer Review: Does not work with Linux - IPP implementation is broken
Summary: 1 Stars

After doing the "safe" thing and getting my printer working under Windows 98 and Windows XP, I started tackling the unix machines on my network under the theory that with IPP and LPD support, this should be easy. It's not. CUPS -> Linksys IPP will simply print your first page over and over until the printer is out of paper. This was tracked as a potential Linux/CUPS in redhat at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=135502
which includes information on how it was determined that this server was to blame.

The workaround suggested in the bug - to use LPD rather than IPP - didn't work well in my experience. basic printing functioned OK as far as printing test pages, but if I tried to bump up the resoltuon of my print job to fully use my photo printer, the server and printer would lock up. I would have to power cycle both the printer and the server to be able to print again.

Linksys apparently isn't fixing this. As indicated in the RedHat bug, they have know about this for years and have not fixed it.

Customer Review: works great, setup a challege
Summary: 3 Stars

Hello, Yes, this works great. Setup with MacOS printer setup utility, I ended up with name, 192.168.15.78 , and location, Location Unknown. Setup with windows XP pro and Vista, I don't remember as I'm not a windows guy, but the linksys site tells you how. To work smooth with my linksys router, I had to call linksys and find the tech sheets on their website to assign the print server a static IP address. You need to be alert and aware to configure this to use on the network with multiple computers both wired and wireless. This is not a plug and play (I don't know if any are). Once properly setup, configured and tested it works great with one exception. Whenever I cancel a print job on either MacOS or WIN, I need to reset the print server to get going again (a simple unplug then plug or press the reset button). I'm only taking the time to write this because I have used this now for over a year with no real issues using multiple wireless and wired computers in my house with family and friends. Have fun, it's worth it.

Customer Review: 4+ hours with tech support, and it still isn't working...
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this only because I happened to have a Linsys wireless router. First, I spent a couple hours on the phone with tech support trying to get the server working (thru the router) with an all-in-one printer/copier/fax/scanner/etc. I was told that the Linksys print servers don't really support the all-in-one type machines. Eventually, I gave up, returned the all-in-one, which wasn't that great anyway and purchased a very basic HP Deskjet 6540 USB printer. I've now spent at least 2-3 hours on the phone with tech support trying to get this printer working with the print server thru the router (btw, they told me that Linksys doesn't support this printer model either, even though it's only a printer and has no other special features). I'm pretty close to giving up, as I can't afford to continue wasting all of this time running through the same steps with one tech support person after another. I don't recommend this unit at all. I think I need to go back to Apple Computers, despite the expense...
