Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys PLK300 PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter KitCustomer Review: 5 for the network, 1 for Linksys support Summary: 1 Stars
In my experience, it is a complete accident if you can get these set up - with Advanced Security - and get them working. The adapters do not behave like the User Guide guides you. The instructions in the FAQs on the Linksys website do not match the instructions in the User Guide. Forget using any of Linksys' online tools. The "Guide Me" isn't specific for this product. I tried their Chat. The response is unbelievably and infuriatingly slow. You present your problem up front, you wait endlessly and answer a ton of questions before getting around to why you contacted them in the first place, and then they keep asking you what your problem is. Phone support? Forget it. You'll be on hold for - literally - hours. You'll finally get someone that will behave like the Chat person - endless questions and never get around to actually addressing your problem. Lots more hold time while they check with someone else. My overarching sense is that no one in their Tech Support group has any clue about these products, and they're just stalling hoping you'll log off or hang up.
So that's my 1 star rating.
Can you persevere? Have you got a lot of hair you can pull out and not worry if it doesn't grow back? Do you have endless hours to sit on hold waiting for a complete lack of help - and somehow figure it out on your own in the meantime. Then maybe this product is for you.
And so - quite by accident - I did manage to get it set up, with Advanced Security. And it works great. 5 stars. I had a wireless network in a fairly large, 2-story house. 4 computers all in different rooms and on both floors, and an internet-connected X-box. The kids constantly whined about how laggy their online gaming or internet access was. So I did a little research, found Powerline, and bought a competing product to this one. A really dumb design - the adapters themselves plugged directly into the power outlet. Who's got that much real estate around their wall plugs, or even power strips? Couldn't get that one to work at all. Decided to try this Linksys product.
And in spite of my ranting about the nonexistent Linksys tech support, the network is great. Much faster and more robust than my wireless network was (I still use it for one roving laptop and an iTouch, and it seems to work better for those now that all the other traffic is off wireless). I have added two more Linksys adapters. My latest one because I just got a Blu-ray player and have discovered Netflix HD streaming - quite remarkable. When I was first investigating Powerline, other reviewers complained about HD streaming over wireless networks. Wasn't an issue for me at the time, and now I don't know if it would be, 'cause Netflix works great with my Powerline network.
Bottom line - I'm convinced the problems I've experienced are directly attributable to the Advanced Security. If you don't try to set up Advanced Security, then I'm willing to bet you won't have the problems I've had. Having had wireless networks for years, I've been trained to think I need plenty of security. But with Powerline, do you really? What's the worry? That someone will sneak up to my house and plug another Powerline adapter and a laptop into one of my exterior power plugs? Not a very plausible security threat, perhaps. So why worry? I guess that's easy for me to say, 'cause I do have the security set up (or at least I think I do). You might feel differently about it if you lived in an apartment building...
