Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys High Gain Antenna Kit for TNC Connectors HGA7TCustomer Review: A little pricey, but made an improvement Summary: 4 Stars
I installed these this weekend and saw a nice improvement. Like some posters have said, it's not the "be all end all" to your problems, but if you are having some minor issues and want a bump in power these worked great.
I had been using a pair of antennas from Radio Shack and saw minimal improvement, then I tried the old half moon tin foil thing and was suprised how much that helped. The problem with that is it is very directional, and in my home my router is in the middle of the house on the top floor making it challenging to focus the strength.
Once I installed these I saw a bump on netstumbler to -50db, and very very consistent, there were no ups and downs which the old antenna had. That in itself is an improvement. My two deadspots also went away. I haven't been outside to see if it's increased the range, I'll do that later. I'll probably add that half moon thing again and see how strong the signal gets in a focused direction also. Not the solution for my problems, but fun to play with. :)
It is a lot of $$, but can solve some problems.
Customer Review: Works Very Well For Me Summary: 5 Stars
Very interesting to see how many people aren't having much success with these antennas. I would be interested in how everyone is measuring their signal strength and their placement of the routers.
I'm in an older house where it is long and narrow with hardly any open spaces.
I'm using these antennas on a WRT54G on one side of the house, in conjunction with the WRE54G repeater on the other side of the building.
I used Netstumbler, and the Dell wireless utility that came with the internal wireless card. I get the same readings for signal strength on both programs.
Before adding the antennas, I was getting an average of -50 to
-55 dBi strength 10 feet from the router. After adding the antenna's, I am averaging -36 to -39 dBi.
Sitting 15 feet from the WRE54G repeater the signal gained exactly the same from -50 to -36 dBi after adding the antennas to the router for some reason.
The worse strength I received in my house jumped from -92 dBi to -67 dBi.
Customer Review: Disappointing Results Summary: 2 Stars
While installation is a snap, I did not achieve a net gain in signal strength. I am using a Linksys WRT54G router and a Linksys WUSB11 hooked up to a TiVo DVR. The signal was fine until I had to move the TiVo about 30' further away into another room, where my signal strength fluctuates from 5% to about 25%, poor to marginal. I get up to a max of 30% at times with two HGA7T in a Linksys AS2TNC antenna stand, however, it usually hovers near 20% which is about what I averaged before. I plan on getting a Linksys WRE54G range expander, despite the configuration issues. I honestly expected to get much better results with the antennae than I did since all I did was move the WUSB11 into another upstairs room, whereas it had previously been directly above the room where the WRT54G was. I tried tweaking the placement of the antennae and the WUSB11, and the reported results were the best I could do. Some slight movements resulted in poorer reception.
Customer Review: Customer service nightmare. Read before buying! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought a WMP54GS and it died after 2 months. I paid to have it sent off to Linksys and then paid to have it sent back to me because Linksys won't ship to an APO. The card they sent back was a refurbished one which begs the question "Why didn't I just buy a refurbished one to begin with and save money?" The thing that really made me mad was that the antenna that came with the card had been chewed on by a dog! It was mangled. I contact Linksys service and the first person I talk to basically tells me to just deal with it. I finally have to call and speak with someone else just to get them to say they'll check into what they can do. It takes a total of 6 emails and a long distance phone call from Okinawa just to get them to offer to replace it. Here's the catch though, I have to send the card and antenna back to them and again pay to have it shipped back to me. Nice to see Linksys
cares about their customers.
Customer Review: Concrete walls are no match for these antennae Summary: 5 Stars
I installed a wireless network for a private school system, and their high school was in a 50-year-old former public school building. Every wall was concrete block, but not the standard ones they use today, no, these were 2-inch-thick-sided survive-a-nuclear-attack type of block.
The stock antennae on the Linksys wireless routers we installed (WRT54G and WRT54GS) just weren't giving them that great a signal, so we installed these kits and BAM! Great signals everywhere.
The trick is, the way these antennae (and any long skinny antennae, for that matter) are designed, the wireless signal radiates out in a donut-shaped pattern. Imagine a donut slid onto a broom handle. That's the signal pattern. These kits make that signal stronger outward, not necessarily upward. So, in a single-story school building with concrete walls, these did their job magnificently.
