Customer Review: Know what you are getting.........
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is not the Holy Grail to solve all your networking connectivity issues. In the appropriate situation, this product works very well. In my case, I needed a little extra "push" in signal strength to be able to connect reliably in the main living area of my house. Due to the construction of my home, my wireless distance is limited (I have a dedicated cable line in a FROG. The room is surrounded by foil wrapped HVAC ducts). Prior to installing the antennas, I had a signal/quality of 20-30%. This made internet connectivity spotty. After installation, I note a quality /signal in the 40-50% range.

Again, we are all looking for different things from our wireless connection. I use mine mainly for checking email, browsing the internet, and on line gaming. A signal of 40-50% is more than suitable for this. If I am updating windows or downloading other large files, I tend to go ahead and hard wire my laptop.

Chances are, if you are getting no signal in areas of your home/office, these antennas arent going to help you. Trying a repeater will probably help you more. If you are looking for just a little extra signal, this product is for you.

Customer Review: Very small improvement

If you buy these antennas, make sure you buy them somewhere that will take returns with no hassles! I paid $30 and got essentially nothing.

I have a Hauppauge wireless Media MVP, which is a device that allows you to stream movies and music wirelessly over 802.11g from your computer to your TV. It is a device that is known for its crummy wireless performance, and its cheap antenna seems to be soldered onto its circuit board.

I could only get -55dbm (3/5 bars) from the Hauppauge device even though my laptop got a full 54mpbs in every corner of my 1200sq.ft. condo. Therefore, I purchased these antennas for my AP hoping I could improve things that way. My device is only about 60 feet away from my access point, on the same floor, and has to penetrate 3 walls.

The addition of these antennas only got me to -48dbm on the Media MVP (3/5 bars), still not good enough to stream video reliably. I am stuck with running a long Cat5 patch cable through my hallway, which is a danger for tripping over and looks ugly.

Many other people have found these antennas to be a rip off. Make sure you can get your money back.

Customer Review: Performance not great for the price
Summary: 3 Stars

Other antennas in this price range from Buffalo, SMC and D-Link do a much better job at the same gain. These fail to cut through any walls that have any significant amount of metal, which describes many condo buildings these days.

For a better deal for a router and antenna, look at the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Wireless-G MIMO Performance Router and Access Point. It has a high gain antenna built in, and has good performance, reliability and features over the Linksys.

I've had better luck with these standalone omni antennas: D-Link 2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor Antenna ( ANT24-0700 ), Buffalo Technology WLE-HG-NDR 6.5 dBi High-Gain Indoor Omnidirectional Broadband Antenna.

Since these Linksys antennas and the WRT54G became more of a consumer product, Linksys has started to skimp on the quality of their parts to cut costs.

Customer Review: Try this and save yourself some bucks

First of all, let me say that I don't own one of these and have never used it. You may wonder what kind of an idiot would write a review for something he's never used.

Well, this is why. I was about to buy this unit when I read Mr. Samuel M. Livingston's very knowledgeable review below where he discusses the fact that all antenna's such as this one are horizontally directional, meaning they work best in the plane perpendicular to the direction the antenna is pointing.

Well, my router is in the basement and ALL the computers that use it are on floors above it. Hmmmmm. You know, I had always wondered why my Linksys router had antennas mounted on highly articulated joints that allow them to rotate in any direction.

I went down to my basement and pushed the antennas down so they were parallel to the floor instead of parallel to the wall. POOF! Every computer in my house gained an additional bar of reception. I didn't need a high-gain antenna kit any more.

Thank you very much, Dr. Livingston... I presume?

Customer Review: Doesn"t work as advertised
Summary: 1 Stars

What's all the hype with this antenna? I have a WRT54GL and did not want to install a third party firmware to help with the distance that my signal was reaching on my property. The router was in my house, in the living room, with no foil insulation and I could not get online with my ipod touch outside my front door. I could step inside and be online. This was on the same level as the router. I bought this antenna after reading some of the reviews, believing that it would help. I bought the one with the brace to hold the antennas vertical and parallel. After installing, I did the test. I took my Ipod and stepped outside my front door. I still could not get online. No signal. The antenas did nothing at all. I had thrown my money away. I took the antenas off and researched Tomato firmware, installed it and followed the suggested settings, and I can not only step outside my front door and get online with my ipod touch but go nearly 100 feet to the other side of my property without losing my signal. Of course they say, "use this firmware at your own risk". I have been using it now for a week and am really pleased.
