Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys High Gain Antenna Kit for TNC Connectors HGA7T

Customer Review: They work fine if you understand what you've purchased
Summary: 5 Stars

Folks, these antennas, as well as the stock antennas, have an omnidirectional (same in all directions) horizontal radiation pattern. This means that, when installed in a suitable location, the most significant reception gains will be seen with equipment that is on the same level as the router itself. Most of the "these did nothing for me" stories appear to be from people who have the router downstairs and the equipment upstairs, or in the basement. These antennas are NOT designed to improve reception between floors in a home.

2.4GHz signals are heavily attenuated by walls, foil-clad insualtion, and other building materials. Interference can also be present from cordless phones, microwaves, wireless cameras and other gear in this band -- adding an antenna can make these types of issues WORSE. Changing the channel your wireless router uses can help, since chances are most of your neighbors are using the same channel you are. Some routers have a built-in site survey utility to help you locate an unused channel.

If you are having trouble reaching a particular device through several walls, or between floors, try a directional antenna as these will concentrate the radio energy where they are pointed. Some reviewers have pointed to a site that illustrates how to make a directional antenna with index cards, glue and foil -- this is a rudementary directional antenna but will surprisingly provide excellent results in many applications.

In summary: If you purchased these antennas and they did not work or made the problem worse, you need to reconsider the type of installation (multi-floor, multi-wall, etc.), sources of interference, channel selection, blocking materials such as foil-clad insulation, as well as proper antenna selection.

Customer Review: understanding omnidirectional antennas
Summary: 4 Stars

i give 4stars because its a little expensive.

actual gain is a out 6dbi or so.

the original antenna that comes with linksys products is

aprox-2.2dbi.

imagine a big virtual donut stuck on to the antenna stick.

the volume of the donut is the actual coverage ,usually 30feet

wide15feet tall.((2dbi))

if the antenna become larger bigger donut can be

stuck on the antenna and thats the idea of the antenna upgrade.

the donut represents invisable omnidirectional caoverage area.

100mwatt is about 20dbi so 7dbi is aprox-40mwatts just enough

for every home and office. but 2.2dbi is 11mwatts ,

if linksys made such antenna (HGA7T) they are letting us

use the potential of linksys wl-routers. i think people who need

wider coverage must have it. but you should readly know what you

are doing, it will make your router visable from street across

and entangle others (wardrivers?) in to your private network.
((wpa,wep-ssid broadcast off,is a must))

and linksys routers have 2 antennas

that makes quality of the signal better. and with highr dbi out

put its maximum.

unlike korea (where i live) there are millions of

macs around inthe states , mac users can easily
hack macadress filterd
secuirity . use wpa - psk

Customer Review: I was going to buy it.
Summary: 3 Stars

My daughter was complaining about loss signal. I looked at the connection she was getting and the signal strength was always low and sometimes there would be disconnects or worse it would not reconnect. I was doing some investigating to buy booster antennas for my wrt54gs. While reading the reviews, I read about making reflectors to increase signal distance of my existing equipment. I made two reflectors one for each antenna and then reposition the router and antennas to point towards my daughter's bedroom which is upstairs. The signal strength increased from low to very good which it never got to in the past. Thank you all for the advice. I used an old manila folder to cut the pieces. After putting them together I used aluminum foil to wrap around the outside. It took me 30 minutes to make both reflectors. Do remember that if you get a stronger antenna, it might interfere with other devices and worse the signal will travel better outside the home where others can get it. Also from what I read the high gain antenna works better if the equipment is on the same plane (floor).

In conclusion, I think you should try the reflectors first. One you avoid the cost, two the new antenna might not improve the situation, and three a stronger signal will be picked up easily by anyone who wants to spy your network.

Customer Review: Turn The Router on it's side.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the antennas to improve reception as did many other people leaving reviews in here. However, while I have a Linksys Wireless 54G upstairs where my desktops are, my desktops are connected by cable to the router. The wireless is for connecting Notebook computers and the X-Box which are downstairs. When you are not connecting room to room on the same floor, but between floors (as I am) you have to box clever. You have to understand that the radiation pattern of a vertical monopole antenna is shaped like a doughnut radiating away from the vertical monopole orthogonally along a horizontal plane. There is very little power radiating straight up from the tip of the monopole and essentially zero power radiated down. Initially I simply turned the router on it's side and resolved most of the reception problems I had downstairs. With the monopole antennas oriented horizontally, then the radiation pattern is circular in the vertical plane. Notebooks computers connected really well and never drop out. The X-Box, which has a rather anemic WiFi attachment, would still occasionally drop out. With the new antennas the X-Box is now fine (but only so long as the router is on it's side).

Customer Review: For me, a waste of money
Summary: 1 Stars

Well, perhaps there are circumsrances where this product would actually increase signal strength over a given distance as compared to the antennas that came with my WRT54G, but it didn't happen in my case...I noticed ZERO improvement.

I also tried the antenna reflector design:
(...)

That didn't do anything for me either.

Now I understand antennas and signal strengths to a certain extent, and the laws of electronics and physics says that both the reflector AND the Linksys "high gain" antenna simply HAVE to make improvements. But, well, for whatever reason, neither made any difference for me.

Very dissapointing.

But try the reflector first, it took me about 30 minutes to make, and it SHOULD do something for you, especially if you are trying to direct your signal in a specific direction.

If you have your router approx in the middle of your house, or half-way-ish between your computers, then you want OMNIDIRECTIONAL signal gain, and in that case, you want the Linksys high gain antennas.

There are several other choices around the internet for increasing signal strength as well.
