Customer Review: Piece of metal "clanging around" in the unit
Summary: 4 Stars

I got the unit and it was nicely packed. I unwraped it and immediately heard a piece of metal moving around inside the unit. You can carefully press the blue-top of the unit to reveal the inside and I moved the unit around until the metal fell out. It was a small piece that looked "unnecessary."

I added this switch to my existing 4 port router and it is working great. I have the router in the basement attached to my cable modem and the switch in my attic attached via a 50-60 ft cable (I don't know the exact length since I manufacture my own cables). I have had the 4 port router for about 1 year now and it is flawless. This switch has allowed me to add Internet access into just about every room in my house.

Other great feature about this switch is that it was truly plug-and-play. I attached one end of my cable into an available port of the router, the other end into the switch and _presto_ Internet access via the switch. Manual was unnecessary :-)

Customer Review: What Quality Control?
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this to replace a Linksys 5-Port Switch that died after several years of use. I'll be surprised if this one lasts a year. I definintely got a bad one, but it's so inexpensive, it's not really worth the expense and inconvenience of returning it to either Linksys or the marketplace seller. This should be a fool-proof device, and probably is if you get a good unit. Mine, on the other hand, thinks there is always something connected to port 4, bringing down the entire network. Actually connecting something to port 4 solved that problem, but I'm still experiencing intermittant periods of packet loss of about 25% that require multiple restarts of the switch to correct. If you're looking for an inexpensive switch, I might suggest buying several of these so you can be sure to get at least one good one, keep another good one as a backup, and return the remainder. Otherwise spend the extra money for a switch made by a company with actual quality control.

Customer Review: For a geek like me to be impressed it takes a lot !!
Summary: 5 Stars

I work in technology and have for the last 10 years. There are two products that I have that really impressed me....

1. TIVO 2. Linksys router/switch

What it takes for me to actually be impressed by a technology product it has to be simple, (plug and play simple) the right price or better and be 99.999% reliable or better.

This product is simple, just plug the darn thing in and it works. You only need to configure it if you want to do something a little non-standard.

It has yet to fail me and I have had it for quite some time.

If you need to share a high speed internet connection like DSL or cable this product is the best I have seen. Also in it;'s latest incarnation it supports PPPoE so it will work with any DSL provider out there without having to install the crummy ISP software on your actual workstation.

Oh yeah and don't forget it supports NAT (Network Address Translation) so it basically acts as a firewall as well.

Customer Review: Good deal for $29
Summary: 5 Stars

The form factor was not exactly as shown in the picture with the large Linksys stackable legs, which would have been nice as I have all Linksys stackable routers and WAPs. Rather it is the exact same unit without the large stackable legs. I can still stack it, and the smaller legs do interlock with other like units, which I have also.

I prefer to stack components rather then have them sit side by side all over the place, and a lot of the new form factors are stand alone, facing up, or standing on their side, made to be the ONLY all-in-one componet for the average home user. If your network is more extensive with several waps and switches along with your router stacking saves space and just looks better.

But either way for $29 it was a great deal! I have found Linksys products to be very reliable. I have a router, two WAPs and two switches, all Linksys products that all work great.

Customer Review: Saved my LAN!
Summary: 5 Stars

While I miss the excuse to upgrade all my computers, it wouldn't have done any good anyway since the network bottleneck was my old ethernet hub and all computers connected to it had much faster NIC cards by now. Seriously, it has taken me from struggling to transfer big files to effortlessly watching movies from a different room.

While I'm not officially a business installation, I think my wife and sons probably rack up more bandwidth than many. The cost was great, install no more than plug-and-play in our mixed mac/linux/windoze family workgroup. I enthusiastically recommend the product to anyone who might need more than four boxes sharing files or an Internet portal. Really, we often have four heavy simultaneous users as well as VOIP phone service sharing one skinny cable connection.
