Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys Cable Modem with Ethernet USB ConnectionCustomer Review: Warning For Router Users Summary: 1 Stars
This is an update after owning the modem for just over 30 days: Originally given 4 Stars, I have reduced the rating to 1 Star. The modem died after a month of use. That left me stuck without service for several days until the weekend could pass and the cable company technician check what the problem was with my Internet Service. After a great deal of checking and cross checking, a new Motorola modem was put in by my cable guy. They sell it for $75 (as opposed to Amazon's $50) but offer 1 year on-site warranty with immediate replacement and installation of a problem unit - not so bad a deal if you really need to be online for certain. The new Motorola Surfboard SB5101 was instantly recognized by my Linksys router - so the problems described below with instalation of the Linksys cable modem wre not encountered. It strikes me as odd that there would be less compatability between a Linksys router and modem than between a Linksys router and Motorola modem.
I got a LinkSys modem because of the good reviews, but also because I thought it would "play nice" with my LinkSys router. My router is the WRT610N Dual N-Band so it is pretty good.
When I got the modem I plugged it in and gave the MAC Address to my cable company. However, I couldn't get on the itnernet; my cable company supplied modem had worked fine - I just got tired of paying the rental. They had me direct connect the modem to the computer - no problems. The problem was with the router! The modem and router did NOT play nice together at all!
Since my router is just over a year old, my call to LinkSys let me know they could tell me how to configure the router to get it working... but it would cost $29. to do so. Their products don't work so well together, so they charge to make them work! I refused to pay.
I got out my LinkSys Router CD, looked up my router login and password and other info, then re-installed the router. The reinstallation process fixed it up so it got on the internet.
If you get this modem and have a router, be prepared for a little hassle getting it going.
First impression of the modem after getting it operational with the router is that it seems to provide faster internet access than the old modem from the calbe company did - though only marginally so, but still enopugh to notice.
This seems to be an excellent modem and works really well. But, if you have a LinkSys WRT610N (and probably any other LinkSys router) be prepared for a little extra work to get the modem going.
