Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Lift Audio Groove Series Noise-Isolating In-Ear Headphones (Black)Customer Review: Good Headphones, But Not Durable Summary: 1 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Perhaps I had too high expectations for these Headphones because they are made by Sony and they look great.
But there were a number of issues, the most serious being the flimsy way the protective screening is attached to the hole the sound comes out of. It is there to prevent ear wax from getting into the hole and blocking the sound.
Every good set of earphones I have use either metal screening or stiff fiberglass that is well affixed to the earphone opening.
Not these earphones. The first time I tried to change to a different sized ear-piece, the screening came right off and I almost lost it since it is so tiny to begin with. Checking the screening out I found it to be a very soft material affixed with a tiny amount of sticky material about as strong as Stick Up Notes use!
I couldn't believe how cheesy the material was that they used to affix this critical part.
The noise isolation seems to be non-existent. I have noise canceling earphones from JVC and they are first rate, but they are full cup earphones so they have a huge head start over any bud style earphones. Plus they have battery driven noise canceling circuitry built into them, which ear bud styles have no room for the circuitry to handle.
The rest of the parts appear to be first class, though I personally would like to see the smallest adapter pieces be smaller yet because I have very small ear openings. But this is a problem I have with almost all earphones, so Sony is no worse than almost all others and better than a lot of earphones I have used.
The smallest adapters I have found were on the Sonic Alloy Ear-buds. Unfortunately, those earphones themselves are terrible.
Now I have Sony Fontopia earphones which have great sound but were overly large for insertion in your ears and were not very durable, having broken down after only a couple of months of use.
I also had two sets of SONY MDRE828LP/SLV Lightweight Ear-buds but the latter are huge when you try to put them in your ears and so are painful if you use them more than an hour or so.
I've also had several full cup Sony headphones, both wired and wireless as well as other brands such as Koss, Cody, Maxell, JVC, etc.
These earphones rank in the top three of earphones I have or have had except for the screen protector issue.
So if you don't swap adapters then you can't go wrong with this model. If you do swap adapters, just be very careful not to displace the screening or the earphones will get ruined very quickly.
By the way, the carrying case with keyring and compartments to hold the extra adapters is a nice touch.
Update 8/9/10 - Sorry to have to retract my 4 star rating, but earphones (particularly made of metal) should not fail in less than 2 1/2 weeks.
I expect failure in $3-4 plastic earphones but not in Sony earphones that have a suggested Retail price of $49.99 and Amazon is selling for $24.99.
I now have earphones that produce sound out of just one side. It isn't the connector plug, so odds are very good it is the wires failing. This is a problem I have had with all thin wire ear bud type earphones. Only these failed faster than any other earphones I have ever had.
I believe that no manufacturer can make reliable wired ear buds. The need for thin wires is just going to put too much strain upon the connections and they are doomed to failure. The other thing that makes these type of earphones fail is the type of plastic used to coat the wires. After 3-4 months it becomes brittle and cracks which leads to breaks in the wiring.
Remember that the actual wires are thinner than a human hair.
So much as I regret having to do so, the abysmal performance of the wiring for these ear buds forces me to reduce the rating to one star and to advise you to avoid buying these ear phones or if you have already purchased them to be extremely careful not to put any strain on the wiring unless you want them to fail.
I feel that the only way to go with ear buds is wireless using Bluetooth. While more expensive, it frees you from wired attachment to you MP3/MP4 unit and thus eliminates the wire strain that has caused the failure of at least a dozen sets of ear buds I have purchased in the past year. I have used the Bluetooth speaker/microphone for my cell phone along with a proper dongle to listen to output from my MP3 player with great success. Of course, since I am deaf in one ear I can get away with that. Just as I will continue testing these earphones since I am currently using the left ear bud since the right one has now failed.
But I am sure that SONY, JVC or the other ear bud manufacturers could come up with a less expensive double Bluetooth ear bud system and dongle if they tried. Just my opinion.
