Customer Review: Good for the short term (edited nov. 21, 2010)

What follows below is my original review I wrote soon after purchasing this player. I will add more to the review (and label it accordingly) below. My original purchase was when this player was selling for ~$85. That purchase was made approximately two years ago.
Old Review:
Everything works as advertised.
Good things:
1. External speaker -- can listen without headphones, great for putting in my pocket while disc golfing or doing other activities where headphones can get in the way. When people hear music coming from my pocket, they ask if I just have the volume way up on my headphones. They are surprised when I pull out the player and it's just a player with a built in speaker.
2. Battery Life -- Hours and hours without charging. I mainly use the Latte in my car (plug into car interface to listen).
3. It's not Apple.
4. Plug USB cord into computer and other side to Latte. Click and drag music files into Latte. You can create folders within the Latte as well. Easy to transfer, easy to move, easy to charge battery.
5. It's shiny. Very catchy. Lots of oohs and aahhhs from other people.
6. It's ~$80.
Bad things:
1. The shuffle feature is not a very good shuffle. If you keep the same songs in the player, you will soon be able to predict the order of the songs. I could predict a string of 7-8 songs at one point. Adding a couple new songs changes the predictable chain of songs.
2. Navigating songs is tedious if you want anything other than to use the shuffle function. The scrolling goes one song/artist at a time and scrolls slowly.
3. Radio is FM only and I have had no success in getting anything other than static to play on it.
Overall: I love it and use it every time I get in my car, to study with, and to plug into my stereo in my house as well. I would recommend this to anyone.
Because of the slow scroll feature, I would strongly urge any prospective buyer to look at the touch screen version of the Latte Ice ($10 more I believe). If you are able to scroll faster, that $10 would be 100% worth it. Unfortunately, I don't have and have not held/used the touch screen version.
New Review:
I stopped using this player approximately 15 months ago. The audio features of the player worked well for the first two months. After that, I started encountering problems. These problems included my player not turning on for days on end (no issue with the battery being empty). Eventually it would come back on, but it could be a couple minutes, hours, or days. After the first 30 minutes of playback (after the first couple months without problem), the player would play with static. The previously clear audio was gone at that point. The slow scroll feature drove me nuts. I only have ~200 songs, and I just could not stand the inability to find a song I wanted to listen to. This was the only mp3 player I have ever owned, but have used friends' and such on road trips (played college tennis for four years). The inability to navigate the device was made more difficult and frustrating because the "shuffle" feature played the same songs most every time. 9 times out of 10 (sounds a bit ridiculous, but no exaggeration) I could name the first 15 songs before they played, in order.
I never got the FM tuner to work (I know you have to have their headphones plugged in to get the signal), or video to play (using their software or without). For $30-40 now, it might be worth it, but I would suggest something else. I will be looking for a Sony player around Black Friday.

MP3 Player
The Ice supports MP3, APE, FLAC, AAC, and WMA audio files, and gives you up to 8 hours of uninterrupted playback on a single charge. Dial in a custom EQ setting or use one of the seven equalization presets (Normal, 3D, Rock, Pop, Classic, Bass, Jazz). If you want to change things up a bit, or tune into the FM TV broadcast at the gym, just call up one of the 30 FM radio presets.
Video Player
Always have access to your favorite shows, movies, and pictures. The Ice supports direct play without conversion with AVI, WMV, FLV, RM, RMVB files, and you can enjoy up to 4 hours of video on a single charge. The 2.8-inch screen is also a great way to share your photos, and makes navigating your files a breeze.
FM Transmitter
You've seen it: the clunky FM transmitter in your buddy's car, allowing him to tune into his MP3 player. Latte saw it too, and decided to make it part of the package. No need for external transmitters here--the Ice can transmit an FM signal anywhere, anytime, allowing you to tune in your car or home stereo to your favorite songs on the Ice.
Voice Recording
Keep track of random great ideas, grab lectures and meetings for later reference, or record whatever tickles your fancy with the included voice recorder. Capture audio through the built-in microphone in WAV format.
External Expandable Memory
If you fill up your 8 Gigs too quickly, the Ice includes a microSD memory card (up to 16 GB) slot. Keep media on separate cards and pop them in on the fly for endless options.
