Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie iamaKey 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive 130870

Customer Review: Get for looks, not speed
Summary: 5 Stars

This flash drive is not the fastest out there (nor is it the slowest), but the design is unlike any other flash drive. It really looks just like a key, and no one will suspect it's a flash drive. While at work, or school, when someone needs a flash drive, and you hand them your "key", many will be amazed. I got it mainly for the look, and I am happy with the way it works. The only thing that I don't like is that if you loose the little plastic protector, good luck ever finding it again, it's a small clear piece of plastic.

As far as size goes, it is a bit bigger than most house keys, I would say about the size of a car key (if you still remember what those look like, seems like everything is wireless/button ignition now).

Customer Review: Fast with zip files but dog slow with individual files
Summary: 3 Stars

Great design and size. Thats why I bought this Lacie 8gb key. Key can transfer a zip file at 7 MBps which is fine. However, if you copy over a folder that is not zipped, it will take soooo much longer! 1 minute for a zip file compared to 35 minutes for the same sized folder non-zipped (about 300 kbps, yes KB)! I guess this key does not do well at all with copying individual files within folders. It also does not do well with deleting individual files within folders.

If you like the design and how it fits with the rest of your keys, get it. If you care about super fast transfers regardless of format, look elsewhere. Its great if you are not short on time. Design beats speed in my book so thats why I got it.

Customer Review: Has that "cool' factor
Summary: 5 Stars

USB keys (flash drives, thumb drives, jump drives) are a dime-a-dozen these days. Unless you need to fill a niche (Security for instance, with the iron key) just about any drive will do.

Lacie put together a great product with this key...it definitely blends in well with my other keys...the metal has held up really really well and after carrying it on my keychain for several months now, there is very little wear on the gold plates that the data transfers through (this is due mainly to the tiny raised lip around the gold plates that (a) protects the from scratching and (b) serves as the 'frame' when you insert it into your USB port.

Great product, good value, excellent durability.

Customer Review: Recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the 8GB version of Iamakey for a few weeks now. As mentioned in other reviews, the screen printing on the sides wears off pretty quickly. No big deal as far as I'm concerned... the convenience of having a low profile jump drive on my key ring far outweighs that.

I felt compelled to write a review though, because of something that happened this weekend. I did a load of laundry, and I inadvertently left my keys in my pocket. So the Iamakey got a full wash and dry! I choked a little when I saw the keys in the dryer... but when I plugged it into the computer, and it worked just fine, sweet! Makes it the perfect jump drive for me, because that's probably not the only time I'll do that.

Customer Review: Catastrophic Failure
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought one. It failed within six months (as many others have reported).

I didn't have a Serial Number... LaCie told me to return it to the reseller. They took it (even though they said that they normally don't) and gave me a new one. I was sure to keep the serial number this time and register the product ASAP.

It's good that I did because, sure enough, within 6 months my second one failed on me.

I sent it back and this time LaCie sent me what is apparently "v2" which I have promptly registered on their support site.

Let's see if the new version lasts. I'm crossing my fingers that they've fixed the problem, but I certainly won't trust it.
