Customer Review: Great idea, but pricey for what it is

I've had the LaCie 8GB USB drive for a month now and it's worked perfectly.
I love the design. Why didn't anyone think of this before??? The casing is stainless steel and fits very conveniently on my keychain. There's no worry of it falling off the keychain as the loophole is part of the casing, unlike other USB flash drives that have a loophole that has a possibility of breaking off.
Besides the aesthetics, the product has functioned great and had no problems. 8 GB of storage is great for such a compact design. The plastic cap that is provided to protect the contacts hasn't fallen off or gotten lost yet, though I can see why some might find it a problem. The good thing is that the contacts are scratch resistant and water resistant (according to the manufacturer). I got a little bit of water on it once (just a few drops) and am glad to say that it was fine.
My only issue with the product is that for an 8 GB USB flash drive, it's pretty pricey. I paid almost $40 for mine and for that price, you could get a USB flash drive with far more capacity. My choice was driven more by the convenience factor and that I don't anticipate needing more than 8 GB of space.

My wife got one of these for me and I have really enjoyed having it on my keyring. I was concerned that it wouldn't hold up to the beating my keys take but so far so good. Its exterior is scratched up and the little plastic cover is long gone, but the USB drive works great. I always have it with me and it is ultra convenient, especially because I carry my keys on my belt.
The biggest draw backs are that occasionally I will leave the drive in my laptop and walk away. This causes me to be without my keys. This isn't a flaw in the design it is just a word of caution to users. Make sure you don't walk away and lock your self out. The second issue is that the weight of the keys puts added stress on the connector on the flash drive as well as in the laptop. This isn't an issue if your laptop is close to the surface, but mine when in the docking station is 6 inches or so off the desk. Again this is my specific configuration and not a design flaw and I am just point these things out so you can be aware.
Would I buy this drive again? Yes, in fact I am thinking about getting one for my wife as a Christmas present...
Customer Review: A Key to a (Possible) Broken Heart

I purchased the 8G Lacie key in February '09 to use for my DJ class. Uploaded 12 songs, that were separated in folders by album, artist and song- that were cued and looped. Had no problem until recently, when a friend pulled it from her computer instead of dragging it to the bin. (Mac) That had been done before with no problem, so why now? Unfortunately, everything was lost! I was able to somehow get it to work the following day, but the cute key-shaped icon was also gone. The day after that was my last day of that DJ segment and sorry to say, absolutely nothing could be read! It wouldn't even show up on the desk top. That was a lot of time spent uploading- twice- for nothing!
Today I spent a great deal of the day on the phone with Lacie, waiting and waiting waiting... I had no success addressing my problem online either. Why isn't a serial number on the key? Without that, you're not able to send your question or concern.
When tech-related things like this work well- life is beautiful, but when they don't, it can break your heart!

I got this USB key a few weeks ago. It worked like all flash drives and fit perfectly on my key ring. Somehow something happened and it wasn't working any more. The Lacie customer service was terrible! I went to their website-- i recommend to register your product because if you want any sort of help you need to register your product with them first. Because it wasn't anything fancy like a hard drive, I opened up the packaging and tossed the serial number in the trash. My fault there. It went defective and after going through a week's worth of customer service help via email, i finally got the email, "we think your USB key is defective, return to reseller." It was irritating because i had been telling them that for a week now! I logged on to Amazon and three clicks later Amazon was already mailing me a replacement USB key and I printed off the free return shipping label. Love Amazon for that. All in all, great product, lousy customer service- unhelpful, too much red tape to even get help and when you do get help it's no good.Customer Review: Dead after a year and a half...BUT they are replacing it!

Bought this in April 2009, just went dead on me...computers wouldn't recognize, etc...HOWEVER...after having an email/web conversation with Lacie, in which they asked for the serial number, I told them that, since the serial was only on the packaging, not on the key, and I(like 99% of people) had long thrown away the packaging, I didn't have the serial. At this point, I was prepared for disappointment, since I had seen repeated threads on Amazon reviews detailing the company's requirement for the serial, and their refusal to honor the warranty without it.
I was very pleasantly surprised when they advised me that they were sending me a replacement unit...all I had to do was send in the defective one. I think this is very reasonable, and, based on their response, would definitely recommend this product. There's never been a problem with design, speed, and functionality...it's just that there was some question about how durable this thing is, and whether or not they would stand behind it.
