Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 250 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 Portable External Hard Drive 301291Customer Review: Very good and external Hard Drive Summary: 5 Stars
I just love its rugged surface and and unique looks
of it! I use it all the time, for almost a year now,
and it never fails me.
sometimes it needs extra power from certain machines, so
you have to connect the additional power cable to another USB
to draw power from, but i can understand that.
after some time it gets really hot, but it seems not to bother it..
I think they should have made some holes in it so air could cool
it down a bit, but anyway, the whole Rugged thing is very cool and smart.
I love mine :)
firewire rocks.
Customer Review: Definitely recommend for students or other users that need portability Summary: 4 Stars
I was sort of forced into buying this particular drive because I really wanted a decent sized drive with firewire 800 capability and this seemed like the only one available. So far, it's been working great, both as a time machine backup system and a scratch disk for my Adobe programs. I wiped the Lacie default software and disk image, so I can't really review its right-out-of-the-boxness, but I will say it's fast, quiet, cool, compact, sturdy, and it works. The -1 star is only because the only rubber casing it comes with is a horrible orange color and extra skins are like $10 with very limited color options.
Customer Review: shock and awe Summary: 1 Stars
Purchased a year ago on the suggestion of a mac enthusiast who owns several of the drives and swears by them.
Sad to report but after a years usage,it unceremoniously died.We have never had any electronics go bad as we are seniors and treat our stuff gently.Quite a shock! We did a LOT of reading and sure enough there is more than a fair share of failures with the product. We replaced with a Western Digital item and patiently await events.
Update Jan 11/11 A computer wiz we met said he would have a try at repair. He returned it functioning! We are using as a spare itunes scratchdisc.
Customer Review: The right small-capacity drive for every situation Summary: 5 Stars
This drive is not as compact as non-ruggedized models, but it is quite portable. It has Firewire 400 and 800 ports, as well as USB 2. It even comes with all three cables, plus a USB-power cable in case bus power over one USB port isn't sufficient. The only thing it lacks is a second Firewire 400 port for easily daisy-chaining with other FW400 drives. The drive is light and quiet. When you plug it into a Mac, a program launches asking if you would like to format it for Mac, Windows, or a hybrid system where a 40 GB Windows partition would be created - nice touch.
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this item to transfer my iTunes to an external hard drive as it was taking up almost all my internal on my Laptop. Worked right out of the box with no problems. Comes with everything you need, You don't need the power plug as the firewire will power this unit but it comes with one anyway incase you need it. It also comes with the firewire 400 and 800. Thats great as I can connect the 800 to my macbook pro and watch movies off the external hardware without any hesitation or stalling. I would definitely recommend this product.
