Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 250 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 Portable External Hard Drive 301291Customer Review: LaCie 250 GB Summary: 4 Stars
I like the armor features. Unfortunately, it will still be damaged if dropped while being used. To Lacie's credit, that bit of info was posted on the internet for you to see before you buy. Many companies only tell of their products limitations only after you open the box.
The disc has worked well. The thing I dislike is that each time I open a folder, it creates a new window on my Mac's screen, creating a lot of clutter. Maybe there is a way to stop it from opening a new window each time, but I do not know how.
Also, their is no search window for the files. I am used to having that feature on the Mac and some other external drives. It does allow a search using Spotlight.
Customer Review: Quiet and one cable Summary: 5 Stars
This hard drive is great if you want something for a monthly back up of your 100+ GBs of music to store off sight.
But I wouldn't use it for time machine or all the time. It gets too hot. Not so hot that you cant put your hand on it, but hot enough so that your wondering, is this safe? 0.o?
The fire wire 800 is great though. One cable for power and data transfer.
Ive all most had it for one year so its all most past my test.
Personally I replace all my hard drives (external and internal) yearly. I stagger them so im only replacing one every 3 months. But I also am a computer tech and have nothing better to do with my free time
Customer Review: FireWire makes all the difference Summary: 5 Stars
I looked at several different manufacturers of hard drives before settling on LeCie. Although other brands had better prices, I have a Mac and decided to go with LeCie because it interfaces well. Set up was simple and I was able to transfer my iTunes and iPhoto library easily. I mistakenly purchased the non-firewire unit for myself. I never realized the difference between transferring data via usb and firewire until I bought the firewire version for my husband. His iTunes library is 3-4 times the size of mine yet the data transfer was actually faster. LeCie makes a great hard drive and it's worth the extra money to upgrade to the firewire version.
Customer Review: Firewire powered is a great feature Summary: 5 Stars
I'm using this with my macbook pro. I looked around a lot because the macbook only has 2 USB ports, so I wanted something I could plug in somewhere else. The Firewire 800 is fast, and it powers the drive, so no carrying around another power pack.
The drive comes with all the cables you will need firewire 800, 400, USB, and a optional power cord if you have an older laptop that might not be pushing enough amps through the USB (ie. you may have to plug 1 USB in for the data, and 1 for the power).
It was plug and play for me. No installing of drivers or any other monkey biz. Just started backing up data.
Customer Review: Expensive but good Summary: 4 Stars
In the last few months I dropped/killed two hard drives so this time I went for the rugged one. It's fat and ugly but I hope it will give more protection than the regular ones - although I don't want to test it but incident could happen...
I have a MacBook Pro so I bought the triple interface drive to be able to use the speed of the FW800 and I am not disappointed, it is much faster than USB 2.0. I am looking forward to buy the rubber set with different colors because I don't like the orange but currently they are not available. For this price at least one other color could have been included in the package.
