Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 250 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 Portable External Hard Drive 301291Customer Review: Great. Except when it stops working. Daily. on 2 drives Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this drive last year (2009) for use instead of a laptop, ferrying a full HD daily backup to and from work. Small, inexpensive, flexible. It worked great for about 3 months. Then it started cutting out and unmounting at random, causing all kinds of trouble. I'm on a Mac, and the Finder would freeze, as would any app trying to access the file system (eg to save files, open, etc.). The least-of-all-evils solution was to pull the plug on the drive. The system complains about ejecting, but at least you don't lose unsaved changes. I complained to LaCie. They first took the drive back and, as far as I can tell, erased it and sent it back (thanks for the high-tech help!). Same problem. Then they sent a "free" AC adapter (for a bus-powered drive). No dice. Then they finally took the drive and sent me a replacement. Worked great for all of 2 weeks. Now, the problem is back. I have no idea of this is typical, but I'd be wary of this product.
Customer Review: Great and Solid Summary: 5 Stars
I got this hard drive to throw in my laptop bag to carry data around, plus images and video clips to edit.
It is a very good drive and has held up well, with no data loss. It has plenty of room for documents, photos, and other things you would like to have.
The multiple interface of FW and USB is also a big plus, because I have a FW connection and prefer that when moving large files.
All in all a good package at a reasonable price with alot of storage. I also have some thinner drives, like the WD, though some of those are USB only. They are also fine for storage and cost less. Depending on my needs, I carry one of those also (or instead) to save a bit of room or weight, and also to carry smaller, less speed intensive items, such as Excel and Word documents.
Customer Review: Excellent Connectivity and Design Summary: 5 Stars
If you are like me and use portable drives on a regular basis...then this drive is for you. I LoVE it!!! It is rugged enough so that I dont have to worry if it slips out of my hands or gets bounced around my bag. It is a little bigger then most portable drives...but not big enough for me to give it a bad review.
The connectivity on this drive just blows away the competition. I mean USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800... that pretty much handles it all.
The drive is bus powered but also has the option to be powered by an AC Adaptor that can be purchased separately.
The speeds of this drive are awesome and due to the various options cannot be compared to anything else.
Get one asap...you wont be sorry.
Customer Review: Almost always works just as intended Summary: 4 Stars
You spend a little more but you'll make everyone envious. My friends don't have externals this versatile. People are complaining about it needing two USB ports.. I expected that but some didn't. My only complaint is that it doesn't work 100% of the time. In the 15 or 16 months I've had it there have been a few times (only a few) where I turned on my computer and it wasn't appearing as connected. In those cases you might need to reboot your computer, sometimes reboot it a couple times.
Anyways other than that I've got nothing to complain about, it stores my information nicely. a great companion for my MacBookPro which has a serious lack of HDD space (120 GBs).
Absolutely the external to get.
Customer Review: WILL NOT buy from Amazon again Summary: 1 Stars
All I can say is that i will never buy any sensitive electronics from Amazon again: The hard drive arrived in a box that I think could have easily fit about 20 identical harddrives. It had almost no padding. If you moved the box around, the hard drive rattled inside. I called Amazon to complain, and they sent me a replacement which was *identically packaged*.
I will not use a hard drive that was "beaten up" all the way to my doorstep. I am afraid it will break down on me 3 weeks later. I went to a local store and paid a few extra dollars to get the same harddrive. Amazon refunded my money after i sent both harddrives back. The bottom line: I wasted valuable time y using Amazon.
