Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304U

Customer Review: Don't order from La Cie
Summary: 1 Stars

Confession: I ordered directly from the La Cie website. I placed my order at the end of August; received a confirmation on Sept. 7; and never received my order. They provided the worst customer service I have ever experienced. It took them weeks to respond to my email about my order. A week later they finally answered my email and promised to deliver the items the following week, but they never did. I sent them another email; no response. I finally had to look them up on the white pages (they don't list a customer number on their website), and I was finally told the items were not in stock. Why couldn't they have told me that earlier? I cancelled my order.

If your order through Amazon.com goes to La Cie, I would be prepared for a long wait.

Customer Review: Great Great Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I have this hooked up to my iMac's Time Machine, and it works wonderfully. My computer backs up about every hour, and the blue LED turns on to let me know it is doing it's business.

Because it is pretty much constantly running, the cooling is constantly having to run. So for me it is a little on the loud side, but its still quieter than the PC laptop I have. Much quieter!

Very sleek design, I don't know what all the hype about it being designed by a designer or anything, it's just a box with a blue light. However, it does look nice, the LED is not distracting at all. And the size is perfect. It's pretty small, so it is easily hidden.

Overall, this is a great external. Great price, Not too loud, sleek design. It's perfect.

Customer Review: Lacie won't replace new DOA unit, repair only.
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought three of these Neil Poulton drives at the start of the month, and one was DOA. Contacted Lacie at the start of the month and I am only now (finally) getting an RMA. Turns out Lacie will not replace my brand new, DOA drive with a new one, they will only "repair" it. I don't have any confidence in any repair work Lacie will do on the drive (which is a Hitachi). Support takes up to three days to answer any emails/queries. This nightmare has gone on now for almost 20 days. At this point I would much rather throw the drive in the trash and forget about it.

Looked at other brands, and they have the same high failure rate, so its a lose/lose no matter which hard drive you purchase, but these drives only have a two year warranty.

Customer Review: Programming defective
Summary: 1 Stars

I returned this hard drive because its programming would not allow me to do what I wanted. I wanted an external hard drive to back up my documents and other items I did not want to lose if my internal hard drive failed. I had to manually back up everything I tried and then I could not access it because the drive asked for a user name and password. I had not given it a user name and password. I could never get past this part of the program. This also prevented me from setting up a schedule for updating my backups. The only way I could access the backups was to go through recovery and then it said I would erase all my original documents. The company I bought it from was very good. As soon as they received it back they refunded my money.

Customer Review: Stylish External Drive, But...
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this drive for $130 a couple months ago, intending to use it as a drive for all of my movies and TV shows (250GB used so far). I simply connected it to my Mac (the drive requires one USB port and a power outlet) and setup was a breeze. I was quickly able to add all of my media to the drive and play it back without a hitch. Also worth noting is that it connects perfectly to my Xbox 360. Now, I can watch my movies on my big screen downstairs.

I've heard that fan-less hard drives such as this one tend to fail after about a year, so I've deducted a point from my rating. I will eventually have to purchase a SECOND drive because I don't want to risk losing all of my data. I think it's important to keep in mind.
