Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304U

Customer Review: fantastic product thus far...
Summary: 5 Stars

so far so good... the best external drive i've had (of 3).

as a mac user it was nice to see instructions with windows instructions as the inset alternate instructions, vs the other way round, although setup involved little more than plugging the drive in...

all in all... it looks good, works great, and does everything i expected from it.... the USB cable could be a bit longer, though I had one to replace it with...

every once in a while it's a tiny bit noisy, but not enough more than the drive in my laptop to be an annoyance....

thus far I'd say it's a quality product, as fast as USB 2.0 allows (it's actually faster than the internal drive for transfers across itself) with very unobtrusive design in a relatively small package...

I actually (accidentally) bought two and had planned to return the second, but ended up giving it as a gift to my parents to share as a backup drive instead after a couple days of use.

Customer Review: Bien hasta la Fecha/Good so Far.
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought this in replacement of my dead Trekstor DataStation. I do a lot of video and audio work with huge files. It only has one month of use and so far i just used around 300gb. Pros: Excelent Design, Quick data transfer, amazing led light. Cons. Kind Noisy when turning it on and off, when touched or grabbed it kepts all fingerprints marks and looks dirty. Using it only on my desktop, no traveling for this guy, only when emergencies applies. So far, A good choice.

Customer Review: Another happy Mac user
Summary: 5 Stars

Delivery to St. Louis from NY was 4 days after order, using Standard, not Expedited, Delivery option. Nice.

Plug and play. Within 10 minutes of opening the box, Apple's Disk Utility had the hard drive partitioned, Time Machine was doing its initial backup to one partition, and I was burning my CD collection to the other partition. Didn't even look at the LaCie Setup Assistant, sorry to say, but it did pop up as soon as I turned on the box.

This is all with the hard drive connected directly to my Intel iMac via USB. I will be interested to see whether I have such effortless success after reconnecting the LaCie to the AirPort Extreme.

And, yeah, it is a cool object, like a block of obsidian casting a flickering blue rectangle onto the desktop. In a dark room, that light appears to be shining from within the desk, and the hard drive is invisible. Ooooh.

Customer Review: Fabulous looking and high capacity
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm very pleased with this purchase. I was lucky to live near a UPS depot since the order was slated for 5 to 8 day (Free Super saver). I ordered late Sunday night and got it mid day Tuesday (Thanks Amazon). Setting up the drive took about 5 mins. I immediately partitioned it and let Time Machine do a backup. The write was a little slow but that was to be expected with the first full backup. During use, I hear the HDD rev up but it does so very quietly, and it flickers the light which can get a little annoying with huge amounts of data moving, but I can live with that. I know big drives are known to crash more but I'll see how long this drive will last since I never had a drive go dead on me (It's bound to happen once). In short, this drive looks fabulous, has high capacity, and Amazon has the best deal on it. I'm very likely to purchase this same drive again soon for redundancy.

Customer Review: Bitter lemon
Summary: 1 Stars

I was dumb.

I was burned (not literally) by a LaCie product years ago and I chose to purchase another one all these years later. Hey, isn't everyone entitled to the benefit of the doubt?

I am still dumb.

I deserve what I got.

Slow, intermittent and unreliable. Why did I buy a 1TB drive when a perfectly good 500GB from Seagate or WD would have been perfect. Four months and counting.

I went for looks.

It has a 'monolithic' quality, like the Tycho Magnetic Anomaly from 2001:A Space Odyssey.

When I try to access the drive, I expect to get the message, "I'm sorry, Dave, I cannot let you do that." except I don't get that message. Accessing the drive, trying to run antivirus on it or even just trying the defrag program causes the computer to crash (WinXP SP3).

As a paperweight, it is perfect.
