Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304U

Customer Review: Love it, would buy another one
Summary: 5 Stars

I do alot of video, picture, marketing type stuff for work and many times the files are pretty big. Also, usually I end up with multiple copies or drafts of every project I work on along with multiple versions of all the source files I used to create it. So I bought this drive to store all the content that I need to keep but don't necessary access often, because of this I wanted something pretty cheap, which this is. Setup was non-existent. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and started dumping files onto it. Couldn't be easier. And I also like the design, its looks good sitting on my desk, its not a boring looking eye-sore like most of them out there (if it were it would be under the desk, not on it). I would have expected this to be much more expensive, and I probably would have still bought it even if it were. I'll probably buy another one when this one fills up, maybe even an extra for the house. This would also be perfect for a HTPC setup where you need extra storage but want something that won't look terrible in your A/V cabinet.

Customer Review: Well that's an interesting response to my inquiry...
Summary: 1 Stars

So I plugged it in, moved all my data over and it died 30 minutes later. Everything is gone. I emailed their tech support to see if I was missing anything and got this response directly from one of their employees:

Beeping drives, the worse failure I know.

This is the spiel for beeping drives:

"Beeps from the hard drive are a sign the drive is dead or dying and the symptoms usually do not stop once they have started and the drive rarely continues to communicate with your computer. If this is the case, the drive will need service or replacing."

I am very sorry Mike, you will get another brand, try something higher up, not such a consumer level drive. Get nothing less than a prosumer grade unit, or make your own destiny! Good bare drives and your own enclosures or a desk SATA adapter are it and have long warranties.

So there you have it straight from the company, do not buy their products. I'll admit I laughed out loud when I read this. I went with Seagate.

Customer Review: LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 HD
Summary: 5 Stars

The LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 HD arrived very fast - normal shipping. I orderd this back in June, 2009, but decided to wait a while before reviewing so I could give an accurate assessment of it's performance.

This was my first USB 2.0 external HD. To tell you the truth, I was skeptical about it's speed since my other external HD's are FW 400 & 800. But I bought it mostly to back up files and for archives. Boy . . . was I surprised (and quite pleased.) This HD is as fast as my FW 400 HD's. I never expected that; which means it can be used as a back up start up drive. I've used it to watch movies (DVD VIDEO_TS folders) as well as with audio, MIDI, text and data files. It works flawlessly! It's nice looking and quiet. I give it a 5 star rating. I can't think of any negatives. Of course, it's not as quick (responsive) as a FW 800 Drive - but I never expected it to be. It's easy to set up- just plug in the power cord and the USB cord. For the price it's well worth buying if you're looking for a good HD with a lot of storage (1 TB)

Customer Review: Pathetic company. Pathetic product.
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought Lacie's 1TB USB 2.0 Neil Poulton external hard drive in December 2009. The drive totally failed in Feb 2010 for total life span of 3 whopping months. I contacted Lacie to inform them of my issue. They will not even attempt to retrieve my data. They want me to mail this piece of crap back in and they'll fix it. The hd is only 3 months old. I expect more than a fix. I expect them to pay to have my data retrieved. If it had been 3 years rather than 3 months I would have been content with them just fixing the hd. But 3 months is too short of time for them to not be responsible for my data. I am going to begin a crusade to bad-mouth this company (and tell my story) as much as possible. I will NEVER buy another product from Lacie and I suggest that anyone looking for an external hd look somewhere else. The customer service/loyalty is absolutely pathetic. They've actually stopped responding to the thread on the support ticket. Seriously, buy a hd from someone else. Lacie is a pathetic company with worthless products.

Customer Review: Mine got noisy, yours might too
Summary: 3 Stars

I have a 500 GB USB/Firewire drive, but the design looks very similar to the product being shown. It has the same black case and same flickering LED in front. I brought the drive because it was quiet, and it stayed quiet for about 4 months and suddenly a fan I didn't know it had started running. It is now very noisy. The sound is like a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner, and it is loud enough to be distracting. Although some people say that this is a fanless drive, it is clearly a fan noise and the back of the drive shows the accumulation of dust typical of devices with a fan. The fan seems to run continuously, even though the drive itself always stays cool. The bad thing is that there is no way of opening up the case to clean out the fan, as I think it could do with a good cleaning.

Apart from the noise, the drive performs well. It's fast enough for me to keep my Iphoto library on the drive itself as my library has long since outgrown the internal hard drive.
