Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304UCustomer Review: I have 2 of these stacked. Great performance and looks too! Summary: 5 Stars
I have 2 of these one on top of the other and use them for data storage and system drive backup via Norton Ghost 15. They work great and are reliable, plus LaCie offers a 2 year warranty (does not include data recovery). What sold me on these 2 drives was the LaCie brand and the Samsung drives (HD301SI) that happen to be in these 2 drives.
NOTE: USB 2.0 transfer rate is 480mbps max no matter what brand external drive you might consider. It is a standard for that protocol whether it is a webcam, external drive, whatever..so don't be misled by advertising hype. Everything and anything that is USB 2.0 maxes out at 480mbps.
The styling is just so simple and sooo elegant too. Neil Poulton did a superb job on these drives. Mine are on 24/7 with no heat issues. I did raise the top stacked drive an extra 1/4" with some adhesive 'feet' to ensure adequate ventilation. Neither drive gets hot..just very slightly warm. I like warm. The blue led in the front bottom edge of these drives frankly for me was also a selling point. They look so damn sexy and sleek with the 'piano black' finish and soft blue glow. Not too bright for me even though others have complained.
The great styling, the 2 year warranty, the LaCie respected brand, the Samsung drives, and the cool, sexy blue light sold me. I am not disappointed. If I need more storage I'll get another one, or two, or three..whatever!!!
Customer Review: You won't get the free online backup Summary: 3 Stars
I really like this drive.
But I'm disappointed with LaCie and their partner Carbonite for not honoring the free online backup for one year that is advertised (on the box and elsewhere) as being included with the drive.
I've contacted both Carbonite and LaCie customer service reps.
Trying to activate the service from the LaCie site takes me to Carbonite site...they say they only have 15 day trials. Carbonite's online LIVE help (incident #251681) said contact LaCie for the activation code.
I used LaCie's online help ticket service to ask for the activation number (Ticket #: 100988701).
Here's LaCie's response, from Jeremy, on Dec 4:
"Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support!
The Mac version of the Carbonite software is actually obtained from us via the ticket system. You have an eligible product; please bear with me, I will have a key for you shortly."
It's 12 days later; no key was provided; Carbonite is going to pull my 15-day free trial unless I subscribe. I will, because it's a reasonable priced service at $54.95 for one year.
But I'm very disappointed that this drive is being sold as including a year's online backup service that the consumer cannot activate. That's a cheat.
Customer Review: LaCie 301304U Summary: 5 Stars
I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac's disk utilities, and created two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.
The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that?
Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues.
All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.
Customer Review: Great drive / 1 YEAR (Carbonite) Backup DOA on Vista x64 Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased the LaCie drive over others because of the 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup. This drive looks great, runs quiet and was a breeze to install on my 3 year old XP Media Center PC. With the software, drive and service it's a great bundle - in theory...
A month after installation, this drive saved me when my old PC started to fail. I was able to boot from a BARTPE CD and move everything to the LaCie before sending it for service (where the drive was wiped). As a USB drive, the LaCie 1TB does the job!
However, the software leaves much to be desired. I replaced the PC with a new Dell XPS430 / Vista x64 only to find the LaCie branded 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup (Carbonite) won't successfully install. While troubleshooting the Carbonite issue (with Carbonite not LaCie), they cancelled my 1 YEAR UNLIMITED service due to inactivity between my PC and their server.
I was then informed I didn't have a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup, but merely a trial and according to their rules if I didn't use it for a month, it was cancelled and I couldn't get it back. No resolution yet, but it's evident the LaCie/Carbonite relationship isn't well oiled and LaCie's marketing of a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED online backup isn't viewed the same way by Carbonite.
Customer Review: amazon apparently doesn't carry the 2tb version ... Summary: 1 Stars
... this may be for a good reason.
i bought the 2tb lacie external hard drive, connected it to my imac, formatted its disk (a hitachi deathstar), & let time machine loose on it. backup failed. formatted the disk again & tried the backup. that worked. the disk went to sleep until time machine tried to create its first incremental backup. that failed with disk errors. ran disk utility & tried to repair the disk. that failed with fatal disk errors. disconnected the drive & packaged it up for return & refund. total failure.
in addition, the unit was really noisy. even with the disk was "idle", it was audible. plus the fancy enclosure has some fiercely unfriendly sharp edges.
i rate this product a total fail. it's the second time i've purchased a lacie product & it was even more disappointing than the first attempt.
no more lacie products for me. also, their tech support is fairly inept.
