Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304UCustomer Review: Newly installed backup software reports it is counterfeit! Summary: 1 Stars
I just bought this 1 TB hard disk, which seems unnecessarily large and bulky. (I may return it for 2 of the 500GB Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drives. I have used those before and really liked them.) I installed the software that was on the hard disk, which is called Genie Backup Assistant 8.0. I was never asked to register the software, and when I ran it and selected the update function, the software accused me of having a counterfeit version!! It asked me to report the incident to them, including the source of the software, which I did. I believe that this is simply a ploy by LaCie or Genie-Soft to get me to register and/or upgrade my software, but it is a tactic that has caused me to instead consider returning the drive.
Customer Review: Lazy very very LaCie Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this Product last year and have used it only to back up data. I turn it on only to update backed up data, which is probably on average 4 times a month. Yet a year later I am now hearing a clicking sound which means death is coming for my backed up data. To add to insult I have tried contacting LaCie as to use my 2 year limited warranty and am having a little trouble getting this done. I recommend you switch to more reliable manufacturers because LaCie is very unreliable now a days.
edit: Well the drive did die on me like I expected. No help from Lacie either as I also expected. Long story short I'll stay away from Lacie from now on and stick to Western Digital drives as I know these are built to last.
Customer Review: clicks and Alzhimers Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this drive and within a few weeks, it clicks and stopped working.
I returned it and got a new drive without a problem but lost all my files.
The second drive lasted 8 months and then after working fine one day, it couldn't access any of my files and after trying several other USB ports and a different computer, it somehow formatted itself!!
Even if I got a new one under warranty, I couldn't trust it again for the third time. It's going in the bin.
I notice some reviewers say it is very reliable and many others say it is a brick. Seems to be an inconsistent in its reliability. If it can pack it in after 8 months, can you take the gamble?
Customer Review: Lemon Summary: 1 Stars
I have purchased three of these drives in the last few months. Two of them have died horribly, and one of those [since I called LaCie and allowed them to "repair" it for me] has died twice. The last survivor is now sitting in a cool dark place, unattached to its power supply, until I can find some way of backing up its contents onto something more reliable. Taking into consideration the two other LaCie terabyte drives of an earlier model I had purchased previously, both of which have also died, the conclusion I must draw is that data stored on a LaCie drive of this capacity might as well be erased immediately, without wasting the time and expense of pretending to preserve it.
Customer Review: Don't buy this drive Summary: 1 Stars
I owned my 1TB Lacie drive for about 18 months when it started making a horrible grinding noise. It was intermittent at first but then grew more and more constant and loud. It sounded like a bad bearing or fan or something. I transferred as much data as I could to another drive. After several months of tolerating this, the drive finally died completely, emitting sick clicking noises. I submitted my problem to Lacie and after several weeks of emails back and forth they said my warranty had expired and that they'd charge me $99 to repair, and that doesn't include data transfer. Since a new drive costs $80, I told them to shove it. I will never buy Lacie products again.
