Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Desk Rack for d2 Hard Drives 108900Customer Review: Organazized. Summary: 4 Stars
Got this in the mail today, I am quite pleased with it.
Firstly, some assembly is required and it's not exactly the most user friendly. Make sure you have a tiny screw driver cause you're gonna need to use it quite a few times. What you have to screw in is the slats that the drives will slide into. It's a little confusing since the slats go on the inside and the screws go on the outside. (I know, makes sense NOW) Anyway, took more time to assemble than I would have liked. It seems like it'll be plenty sturdy (not planning on stacking books on it). One thing that did happen is one of the tiny rubber "feet" kinda flew off when i dragged it on a corner. Really tiny, I have no idea where it shot off to... but it doesn't really affect how the rack stands. It's pretty cheaply attached, but then again i shouldn't have placed it in the crude manner I did. Not a big deal.
The appearance is extremely basic, but has a really nice metal polish to it. Looks sleek and when you have your drives in, it looks really awesome. I currently have three drives, two of which are the older LaCie housing... they will also fit into this storage rack. Let me reemphasize that it looks GREAT with the drives in and on your desk or on your equipment rack.
I rarely run things off the drives themselves and use them predominately for backup or for extra storage/archive. When I do run off the drives it's only for video editing and the drives rarely heat up at all so I cannot attest to the heat that gets generated based on the amount of space between each drive. In my opinion, it seems like sufficient room for general drive use.
There is a little bit of general bitterness about the price. It is 50 bucks for a piece of bent metal, which is essentially what you're getting but... you figure that if you're the type of person that can afford a few external drives, you're probably the sort of person that can afford a rack. I'm sure that many of us could makeshift something, but this is designed for this sort of thing and it really is efficient. Plus, it's the type of purchase that you make and you feel really satisfied with when you go to bed. It's worth it.
Almost 5 stars.
