This drive is extermely reliable and fast. Have been using daily for about 6 months and no isses to date. Has multiple options for connection (USB, Firewire, eSATA) and even includes the necessary cables, which makes it ideal for future compatability. Set up was easy (plus and play) and instructions were straightfoward. Software is adequate for simple backup of drive/files. No sound (as there is no fan). Drive never get hot even under constant use (ie video playback, etc). Lacie's technical service does leave something to be desired however. Had a few basic questions not related to any functional problems, and they couldn't answer. Would definetly recommend for someone looking for reliable and solid external drive at a good price.Customer Review: So far so good

Four stars because I cannot speak to the question of longevity.
This device has been running for about a week. It is dead quiet and runs cool. The the corrugated sides may help disperse heat. Those sides certainly make this unit more attractive than the old LaCie models.
Connecting to a Mac could not have been easier: I just plugged it in. No, really.
I was also able to daisy chain two LaCie drives with the Firewire connector that is included in the box. In fact, all the connectors -- Firewire 400, Firewire 800 and USB are included in the box.
I hope that I like this product as much a year from now as I do now, but only time will answer questions about reliability.

The product was defective. I followed the setup proedure par instruction. It worked OK for an hour or so, then it started giving me continuously disk-write error for some time and hung my PC (Vista). Then it completely stopped working. PC would not even recognize the USB or Firewire connected product. I tried to call manufacturer's tech support(not a 800 number). After waiting on the line for about 15 minutes gave up. Then I had to register the product first to try to get email support. I got email reply after 2 days with some suggestions. Those did not work.
Finally, I returned the product to Amazon and Amazon, upon receipt of the returned product, promptly credited my credit card with the full amount.

They've changed the design of the power supply, which, hopefully, will correct the problem that the earlier model had. If you're using this with multiple external hard drives, be warned that the speed of the connection between them is limited to the speed of the connection to your computer. For example, if your daisy chain or RAID configuration connects to your computer via Firewire 800, then all of the connections between your external drives will be limited to Firewire 800 or slower, even though all of your external hard drives may be eSata compatible. Also, it's very difficult to create a RAID configuration without reformatting the drive which is to be mirrored.Customer Review: La cie external HD

I purchased the La Cie because it met my need for a external HD at 500 GB.
I plugged it in and it immediately recognized my Macbook. It was simple to set
up and works great. I found that after a few days of use I could find documents or
photos, etc. that I need to locate I had been working on with great ease with the built in Time Machine that
comes with all the new Macs. For example, I Just open Pages or IPhoto and then open click
on the Time Machine icon on my dock and presto I am in Time Machine's program. Backups
are a breeze that I no longer have to worry about. I highly recommend La Cie 301825U d2
Quadra 500.
