The d2 Quadra 500GB is just exactly what I have been looking for. It is a quiet reliable external hard drive. When I first got it I was amazed about the weight of the package. The sturdy heat dispensing aluminum case is not the lightest but of high quality. Even after longer use, although the drive uses passive cooling, it does not get hot, only warm. Setup and installing the drive was really easy. I use it under Windows Vista and it was usable in just minutes without any problems. The included backup software serves basic needs, but I use third party software for regular backups.
The auto power function is really nice, it automatically shuts the drive down after disconnecting the USB cable (I have only used the USB connection so far).The blue light indicating the use is cool and not annoying. The four connection options, including cables, are quite nice and good for the future, although for now I only use USB.
After having it for about two months I can say that I really love the d2 Quadra and would recommend it to anyone.

I use this product on an iMac running Leopard, using Time Machine to back up all of our family photos, documents, videos and music. It is incredibly easy to set up and runs without any difficulty. My best compliment is that you don't notice it until you need to restore something, then you're glad it's there. It's extremely quiet and survives black-outs and young children.
In February 2009, I purchased another LaCie drive to add to my storage capacity. With a young family, we generate lots of pictures, movies, e-mails, etc. We use one LaCie as our Time Machine drive and the other as the primary drive for pictures, movies and iTunes content. No issues with the original drive. No issues connecting the new drive to the original, or integrating the new drive into our system (wireless network with two Airport base stations). I remain very satisfied with all aspects of this drive and plan to purchase another LaCie product when our storage requirements increase.

Right out the box, everything worked fine, my only complaint was that this drive was so incredibly LOUD. After 4 days, it no longer read on my PC. Tried everything and came to conclusion with LaCie tech support that the hard drive was busted.
I was on hold with LaCie customer service for nearly an hour only to have a 2 minute conversation with their tech support that said they couldn't do anything because I didn't buy it direct from LaCie. The only thing they said they could do for me, was to have me send the drive to their where house for refurbishment. But considering a bought a new product, I didn't want to spend the money and time for a product that should be new and functional.
Called Amazon - they took the return and refunded my money in less than a week. I'm currently looking for a new hard drive now. I've heard good things about LaCie, perhaps I just got a defected one? However, I'm still checking elsewhere.

I bought a 320 gb d2 last year for myself, and when my girlfriend mentioned that she needed a hard-drive, I immediately thought of LaCie. The only problem I had was that it was cheaper to buy the 500 for her this year than the 320 for myself last year! The daisy-chaining capabilities are useful, and I love the one-touch shortcut button feature. This generation of the d2 Quadra also features an opportunity to partition the hard-drive into separate mac and pc units as soon as you initially install it (no work to set it up!) or leave it as just mac or just pc. The fan-less cooling system is perfect and quiet so long as you are using the hard-drive in an open or somewhat ventilated area (at least an inch or so in every direction). However, if you're looking for something that you can tuck somewhere out of the way, you might look for something else.Customer Review: Great Product!

I just received my product today and it works fantastic! I connected it to my Macbook Pro via Fire Wire 800 and I am getting on average of 45mb/s write speeds. I can't wait to get a eSATA PCI card so i can utilize the eSATA port on the Hard Drive.
The Drive was very easy to format. I devoted half my drive to backing up my Macbook Pro's Hard Drive and the other half for Extra Storage. Also, Time Machine works Flawlessly with this Hard Drive. Easy Plug and Play. Im planning on purchasing another one so I can utilize the RAID 0 or RAID 1 feature.
The Hard Drive has no built in fan so it is whisper quiet. After the disk has been spinning for hours doing the initial backup of my files on my laptop, it is running cooler than my Macbook Pro's Hard Drive that spins at the slower 5400rpm.
