Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG GSA-E50L Slim 8x DVD±RW DL USB 2.0 Powered External Drive w/LightScribe (Black/White)Customer Review: LG Slimline DVD Re-Writer Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased one of these about two months ago to accompany my Acer Aspire One.
I have successfully used it with both Windows XP, and with Ubuntu Jaunty and Karmic.
I have found no issues with the operation of it, although I did have to go searching for Lightscribe drivers for Windows. (I expected to have to do so for Linux).
It comes with two USB cables; one for data and another for power, although I've not had to use the second power cable yet at all.
I would certainly recommend this unit without any hesitation.
Customer Review: LOVE it Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
1) Small and portable
2) USB-powered
3) Burns at a great speed!
4) Is great so far! I've had it for a day and have been burning away happily
Cons:
1) USB cord a bit short, which might be a problem if you're a deskptop user. This peripheral is better suited for laptop users
2) It took me forever to figure out which software I needed to install just to burn a DVD without much fuss (Nero 7 Essentials). It's on the provided software CD but it should have been labeled a little more clearly
Customer Review: Great Traveling Product Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased this DVD to use on my travels to complement my new 8 inch Acer laptop (the 8 inch Acer does not come with DVD). This DVD is super small, packs great, and works great.
It also does not need external power. It takes the power from your computer using 2 USB ports - so you can sit in an airport (or anywhere) and do not need to be connected to any cords.
I have also used with my larger 17 inch laptop for those rare times you need 2 DVDs to record DVD to DVD.
Yes, would buy again.
Customer Review: Not worth any amount of $$$ Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this about a year ago and it worked fine at first. The description says it's USB powered, but I've never been able to use it without the included power cord. I can't find the cord, so I tried it via USB only and only get the light for a few seconds then nothing. I thought I needed a new power cord, but I see another reviewer had the same issue even after a new power cord. I guess I'll just call this one a brick and invest in a better one for times when I still need a CD or DVD.
Customer Review: Better than nothing. Summary: 4 Stars
Netbooks do not have built in CD/DVD drives, but this will resolve that inequity rather nicely. You will be able to boot, read, and write CD/DVD media of all kinds. It works on any computer with an extra USB port. Don't try to connect it to a hub though; it has to be connected to its own USB port. It's also very light weight. I've had mine for over a year and it seems to travel well.
