Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD270 Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: So many things wrong, I gave up
Summary: 2 Stars

I started out liking this unit, easy to set up, upconverts fine to my 720p tv set and the BluRay discs looked sharp (even though I dont' have a 1080p set.) The first problem came when playing through a long DVD program, the audio and video were a second out of sync. Apparently, I learned this may happen on the dual layer longer DVDs, the problem showing up when it switches to the dual layer. Anyway, it happened 3/4 through the new Batman movie. My heart sank.

Had to boost the audio volume more than I wanted to. I have the htmi cable running to the TV and the audio coming out back of TV into two Creative speakers. Gigaworks T40. Nice for our size room, and I can't run lots of volume cause of my elderly mother's hearing. Anyway, the sound started to be very very low, then explode and distort. There was a lot of vibration and heat from the unit. The gal at LG help checked with her tech people, and they were creating a firmware update for the sync problem. With the other problems, I didn't want to wait for that to arrive, so I returned the unit to Amazon.

Perhaps i got a bum unit. Am disappointed it's an LG unit, cause I bought because of the brand and the sale price. oh well...

Customer Review: Works Only With Older Blu Rays
Summary: 1 Stars

It looks like I too am experiencing some of the playback problems that many are having. I bought this unit in October of 2009 based upon the great reviews on the Amazon website. The player worked well until the last few months. It seems that none of the newer titles I have bought will play. I tried updating the firmware through the LG website, but that did not work. I called LG and gave them my list of movies that will not play: Percy Jackson, How to Train Your Dragon, Toy Story 3 and Shrek 4. They sent me a disc to update the firmware, but that did not help either. My older titles load and play just fine. I certainly expected my player to work with newer titles as they were released. I have called LG yet again and they are going to try to investigate the problem for me again. I guess I can just wait another 3 weeks for an updated disc that will probably not solve my problem. It looks like I might be springing for a new player after just over a year of use. This time I will opt for a different manufacturer with wifi so that the unit can update itself. This is the secod time that I have been burned by a LG product. There will not be a third.

Customer Review: Simple, Inexpensive, Performs
Summary: 5 Stars

This is exactly what I've been waiting for - a small, simple, brand name, attractive and inexpensive Blu-Ray player that performs well. I just needed something that plays Blu-Ray discs; I didn't want to pay extra for online features I may never use (I can get online content elsewhere such as Netflix on my Xbox 360). At the time of this review the price was about 65 bucks below list.

I'm giving this unit 5 stars because of the price/performance/features ratio. As others have mentioned (I won't duplicate their lists) it has all of the major video/audio functions anyone with an HD home theater setup would need (you're out of luck if you want component video though). Get yourself an HDMI cable and you're all set.

Some general notes:
1. The Quantum of Solace Blu-Ray disc takes 72 seconds to get from power-on to the warning about illegal use.
2. It froze on me the first time I used it, about 16 seconds into the movie. It hasn't happened since.
3. I suggest powering it on first without any disc and going through the video and audio settings to get things right for your setup.

Customer Review: Piece of junk; Blu-ray technology is flawed
Summary: 1 Stars

It's incredible the amount of aggravation I get from being all excited when a new movie comes out, bringing it home, unwrapping the plastic, and putting it in my blu ray player, so I can watch it recognize the disc, start to load, and then just sit there. And not play the movie. I would give it more stars for picture and sound quality, but it would have to play the discs first. I have the most current firmware, and even if a movie plays, it loses audio sync partway through the movie, and it's like I'm watching a 70's kung fu movie. Not exactly the high definition experience they advertise.

Part of this is LG's fault, for making a crappy player, and some of it is blu ray for crippling the discs with copyright protection that make all the firmware updates a necessity. They need to have the firmware roll out to the players first, then the movies. This is BS that I have to wait until LG gets around to writing the new firmware, so that I can watch the movies I've already purchased.

I'm just going to start pirating the movies and streaming them from my HTPC.

Customer Review: Great inexpensive player
Summary: 5 Stars

This player is everything I hoped for and more. I didn't need a lot of fancy bells and whistles, just a player that would marvelously showcase films in Blu-ray and hopefully do a good job of upconverting my existing DVD collection. Well it has more than met my expectations. Blu-rays look phenomonial on this player. Firmware updates had always been one of my concerns when purchasing a bluray player, but so far it hasn't had a problem playing any of my Blu-rays I'm happy to say (and though there is no direct internet access it could be easily updated using a flash drive, so I don't really see it as too much of a drawback). And my plain old DVDs look so much better on this player. True, they are not bluray quality, but it's like night and day in comparison to how they looked on my HDTV using a standard DVD player. I really can't say enough about it's upconverting picture quality. I would highly recommend this player to anyone who's looking for a basic inexpensive bluray player and doesn't care about streaming films and content (it really wasn't a priority for me).
