Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD270 Blu-ray Disc PlayerCustomer Review: Very Disappointed.... Summary: 2 Stars
We decided to buy this player because it was on sale after thanksgiving (2009). So far we've had nothing but problems... Any blu-ray discs that require a firmware update do not play. They pop out with a message saying "error" and won't even attempt to load. Other discs freeze during play and don't unfreeze (so it's not waiting to load, it just locks up). You have to unplug the unit to fix the freeze. We contacted LG and were told they would send a firmware disc to update the player. Over a month goes by without any disc being sent to the house, so we call again to complain. Oh, they forgot, it was never sent. Finally the disc arrives and doesn't work. Nothing is updated so we call yet again. They say we're beyond our warranty and that in order for them to do anything they want $70 (which is over half way to a new player, in which case we'd buy a different one). They were very careful to not send the update disc until we were pushed just beyond the period of service. With much argument, we got them to agree to look at it without the fee. After being serviced, it came back in the mail today and still doesn't work. Forth call to LG and they said they'll only take another look, no replacement. We're not impressed....
Terrible customer service, terrible player, spend the extra $20 and get the Sony! Friends have it and love it. I wish we would have.
Customer Review: 720p HDTV Use Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this LG BD270 Blu-ray player for my Panasonic 50' plasma 720p TV. I wanted to be able to view a high quality picture using either standard DVD's or Blu-ray DVD's. Although my plasma is not up to the standard of the 1080p signal put out by the Blu-ray player running Blu-ray discs, there is no such thing on the market as a 720p DVD player. You either go with a standard 480p DVD player or jump up to the Blu-ray. So jump I did.
I've owned it only a short time and have viewed only several 480p DVD's. But I am impressed with the ability of the LG to upconvert 480p DVD's to 720p quality. I know Blu-ray discs will give me an even better picture quality far exceeding my plasma's native resolution, but for the time being paying $1 at Redbox to rent 480p standard DVD's sure beats the heck out of paying $3 to $4 for renting Blu-ray discs. I can't speak for the quality this unit puts out with Blu-ray discs, (although it must be just fine based on the reviews), but I can tell you it does a very adequate job upconverting 480p DVD's to 720p standards. So unless you're watching a cinematic wonder, using 480p DVD's from this unit for 720p and perhaps 1080p HDTV's is perfectly acceptable and a lot cheaper to rent. And for $99 at Amazon, I really can't beat the value I'm getting out of this Blu-ray player!
Customer Review: Appears to be a quality piece of equipment Summary: 5 Stars
Impulse buy on their Black Friday deal. I refused to go with an no name company for 20 bucks less. So far I've played 2 DVD and 1 Blu Ray on her flawlessly. I have this set to 1080p, HDMI connected to my Sharp 37" 1080P tv.
Factory box was inside a padded Amazon box, always appreciated.
From my readings, it appears Blu Ray players can be slow loading discs, noisy/loud, render artifacts? This unit suffers from none of those things. The unit is very fast, equally as fast on dvd's as a dvd player. Blu Ray does need to load it seems but times are very fast (sub 5 seconds on my Gladiator BR disc).
Controls on the remote are all there, clearly labeled, open tray button is nice although the overall feel of it is very cheap. Options are simple and easy to understand both on screen and on the remote.
Picture quality is outstanding. Obviously this is subject to connection and tv so read reviews with this is mind.
I have sound running through my TV so its not a surround setup but sounds great as well.
Overall I'm very pleased. As long as this player lasts, it will have been the perfect purchase for me.
(no ethernet needed, I'm not a movie head, so extra features, "games" and netflix are not needed)
Customer Review: Not worth it. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this bluray player on November 25th, 2009 - from Amazon.
It worked good, had decent bluray and upconverting dvd playback, quiet, the load times wasn't bad either.
The reason why I rated it so low is simply there's no value in buying this. It comes with a 1year warranty for parts, and 90 day warranty for labor. The player stopped playing bluray discs on 3/21/10. It will still play dvds, but whenever I put any bluray in, it will sit there for at least 10 minutes, then eject the disc and have a error on screen saying "check disc."
I gave LG a call, talked to their support department, they told me that it has to be sent in for repair and the cost to repair it is $65. They claim because its not covered by the labor warranty I have to pay for their labor to fix it. I told them its better to buy a new one and stop buying lg products instead.
This is a warning to anyone planning to buy bluray players - always make sure your warranty coverts parts and labor for a full year. I saw a 1year warranty but didn't realize they would screw me on the labor cost.
If I could find 3yr warranty bluray players I would buy that instead, but it seems like no company wants to stand behind their products for that long.
Customer Review: worst bluray ever Summary: 1 Stars
within two months of purchasing this bluray, the video began turning off. I would eject, power down, reinsert, and sometimes it would play fine for awhile. But this occurred with every type of DVD, store-bought, home-made, whether it was movies or a tv show. I tried another HDMI cable, and a software download. Eventually it finally stopped putting out video completely, and since it was out of warranty, I could not return it. I threw it away in disgust. Then I decided to put my faith in LG again, and got another model, the BD550. Everything was perfect for about 10 days, then BAM, video problems again. The screen would get a heavy pink overtone, then cut out. I downloaded an update, worked ok for a few days, then began the same thing. I tried using the composite video cable, and sure enough, video was working fine there; it was only the HDMI output. However, even after I would switch over, the bluray would freeze on a black screen for a few seconds, then resume normal operations. It would do this many times in a row. I cannot get through a short 23 minute TV show without at least a half dozen "blinkouts". and of course, since its been past the 90 manufacturer warranty, nothing can be done about it that won't cost me labor. DO NOT EVER BUY BLURAY AGAIN!!!
