Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD270 Blu-ray Disc PlayerCustomer Review: Third review - great value! Summary: 4 Stars
I paid the $99.99 black friday price.
I've only used it one day and with only DVDs, not Blurays yet. Easy to hook up via HDMI. I had to cycle the resolution button to 720p as it defaults to 1080p before I could see the menu. I had to set audio to pass thru and not multchannel pcm. DVDs look as expected except I had problems with a few 2:35 widescreen DVDs (older ones) that did not use as much TV screen space as my other DVD player. This was close to being a reason to return the player. But I downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade (not dated) and it was a full version newer. Then the problem DVDs played much better, 1 was fine, 2 could be adjusted very well via the Zoom button. The zoom button is not very user friendly but it gets the job done.
I'll update this review after I test out Blurays but I wanted to encourage everyone to install the firmware upgrade. BTW, the "driver" didn't have an update, but the "SW" (software) did. It says your model is the BD350, don't let that confuse you. I used a DVD and not USB to perform the upgrade. I hope LG emails registered users when there are newer upgrades.
12-01-2009 update
I watched Taking Pelham 123 on Bluray last night. The BD270 played the movie flawlessly. My next test will be play secondary audio tracks such as director commentaries.
03-02-2010 update
I was having trouble with Epic Conditions bluray. The disc played but the menu system did not work. Selecting a particular episode transferred me to the wrong episode. I installed a newer version of the firmware (newer than my first update) but it did not fix this particular problem. The player has now been discontinued by LG so grab the latest firmware while you can.
Customer Review: Affordable and easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
I have to be honest and tell you that I actually ordered the LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player but ended up sending it back in exchange for this Blu Ray player. I was on the market for a Blu Ray player that was being offered at a great price, easy to install and user friendly since I was purchasing it as a gift for an older person. The LG BD270 Blu-ray Disc Player was the answer. This person has no internet connection and has never owned a DVD player, I needed a Blu Ray player that would play both DVD and Blu Ray with no hassles. It is ready for use out of the box. Installation was a breeze.
The colors are vivid and clean. The sound quality is superb. There is no long down time in loading and waiting for the menu or movie to begin. Even though the remote has a lot of buttons, I was able to ensure the user that it will be easy to operate.
UPDATE 03/01/10: This blu-ray player is still working great for the person I purchased it for, but I did end up purchasing the LG BD270 a second time for myself since we have internet connections. If you are looking for a ready to use Blu Ray player that is affordable and reliable and you don't care for all the WiFi "extras", then the LG BD270 is it. Now if you are looking for a more advanced Blu Ray player, than I would suggest the LG BD370 (see the newer model that is available - LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player).
Customer Review: Worst Customer Service EVER! HORRIBLE Player too! Summary: 1 Stars
I just wanted to add my name to the list of unsatisfied LG customers. I purchased this player for my sister as a Gift in December 2009. In early November it started acting up and wouldn't work properly with playing discs of all sorts -- DVD's and Blu-ray's. It was a mixed bag, but was always problematic. Sometimes a movie would play for fifteen minutes or so before messing up. I contacted them in November about the issue and they sent me an updated firmware and driver disc, which I only found out about by reading up about the player online. The latest update was not available on their website. I installed the updates, and guess what? It fixed NONE of the playback issues. Lovely. Then when talking to them over the phone, and referencing where I had purchased it from, when, and with whom I spoke to about the player issues I was informed they had NO RECORD OF TALKING TO ME! Hilarious, seeing as how I had the updated disc and firmware, a note from LG, etc. The problem is when I called in November my warranty was valid, but then they claimed I couldn't be helped because I purchased it the first week of December, and now (as of my writing) it is December 13th! Oh Joy! In other words, this is the biggest joke of a company in Blu-ray players (that I am aware of). I own a PS3, which I have owned for many years, and have never once had any problems with. This is the worst hassle I have ever had to deal with regarding a media player of any variety. I would not recommend any of LG's Blu-ray players to even my worst enemies. It's that bad, and not worth the trouble!
AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS! You have been warned, by me and several other dissatisfied customers.
Customer Review: Superb value Summary: 5 Stars
For some reason, I have bad luck with DVD players. After 8-12 months, they quit loading and playing most of my DVDs. It's happened now about four times. I had to scrap my Samsung Blu-Ray player after 11 months and wanted something that didn't cost very much if I had to replace the new one in a year or so.
The BD270 fit the bill perfectly. The setup was a snap: from box to playing a movie took maybe fifteen minutes, part of which was reading the manual.
There are two things about this player that I REALLY like: the fast loading of DVDs and the zoom features. Loading a DVD was the fastest of the several players I've had. And the zoom feature gives you more control over how to view 4:3 and 2.35:1 content. You can zoom a little or a lot in small increments. I'm watching now for the 17th time the "Winds and War" and "War and Remembrance" series, and the incremental zoom allows me to watch the 4:3 content by almost filling my 16:9 TV without any distortion or loss of resolution.
If you're on a budget, like simplicity, but still want to watch great video, this is a unit to consider.
(There's no Internet interface, but that's something I don't use anyway. I couldn't rate the sound since I take my sound from the TV using analog audio cables to my bookshelf mini stereo system.)
By the way, this is the fourth LG product I have: my TV is a 42" LG 1080p 120 Hz LED (great set), my monitor is a 17" LG, I have an external LG DVD/CD drive, and now the Blu-Ray player. LG seems to know what they're doing without breaking our budgets.

Customer Review: Excellent value for the money. Summary: 5 Stars
This Blu-ray Disc player covers all the basics, but is lean on extras. What it does do, it does very well. It plays Blu-ray discs, and can output 480P, 720P, 1080i, and 1080P over HDMI cable. It can send audio to your AV receiver or TV via HDMI or digital coax. It can also up-convert DVDs, play audio CDs, MP3s, and photos. One thing I have been very impressed with is that it loads a Blu-ray disc very quickly. Setup was a really easy. (Well, I did have to go buy and HDMI cable, but more on that in a bit...) Picture and sound quality with this player have been very good with my setup. It has played every disc I've thrown at it thus far with no trouble.
Negatives: It can't do BD-live, as it has no way to connect to the internet. If you want that, you'll need to shop for a higher-end model. Another feature that it is missing (which I really enjoyed on my old DVD player) is there is no option (in the player's firmware) to have the player display the remaining time in a movie. Some Blu-ray titles (such as "Up") have a feature where you can display your progress through the movie as a graph at the bottom of the screen (much like a DVR), but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Another odd omission: No HDMI cable is provided. Instead, the manufacturer supplies RCA connector cabling (red, white, and yellow--composite video and stereo audio). I'm honestly not sure why anyone would want to buy a Blu-ray player and connect it using an RCA cable... However, HDMI cables are cheap as long as you don't go for the super-mega-ultra-premium-Digital! cable nonsense that is out there.
