Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD270 Blu-ray Disc PlayerCustomer Review: Questionable quality? Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this player on an impulse. Had the money, wanted a Bluray player so ordered what seemed to be a good deal with only a half hour of research online. Not always the best to buy something without doing a study on the technology and what's available. With that said, this didn't turn out to be terrible. For the money, it wasn't bad, so far.
With that said, the bluray video playback looks pretty good. I got a few Bluray movies from Netflix that played the previews fine but would not start the movie. When I upgraded to the latest firmware, that problem was fixed. As some have mentioned, the unit runs hot but not terribly hot as some indicated. The top gets warm to the touch. There are vent holes on the top so with this unit you do not want to have any other device stacked on top of it. It needs the free air ventilation. It did smell on the first day after a movie or two ( as others said it did) but that smell went completely away after that first day of use.
The up converting of regular DVDs is grainy and not near the quality of my old "HD" DVD player/up converting. I think this is my biggest disappointment with the player is that it doesn't up convert very well. Sure it's 1080P but there is a lot of noise in the picture vs. Bluray or my Toshiba HD up converting player using regular DVDs.
Bottom line, it plays Bluray disks well but it plays regular DVDs with noise in the picture.
I will update if my experience with the player changes.
Update 4-2-2010:
I connected the Bluray player to my sound system via the RCA outputs and found that the audio cuts in and out and pops when the audio comes back after restarting a pause of the video. It pops so loud, I'm afraid it will ruin my speakers. This does not occur when using the audio for the HDMI. It appears to be only the RCA analog audio output. I've figured out that the analog audio output shuts down on quiet scenes of the movie like when people are talking low or other low volume scenes or when the movie is paused for more than 5 seconds. When it the audio level comes back up in the movie, there is a huge POP noise. I'm sure all units do this as most people don't use the analog audio output. Would be interesting to see if another owner could confirm this problem. With that said, I've decided to send the unit back for a refund. I won't by an LG for the replacement. I think I'm just going to get a PlayStation since it's only $100 more than the Sony Bluray player that I was going to replace the LG with. 100 dollars more for the ability to play games in addition to watch Bluray seems worth it.
Update 5-8-2010
I decided not to send the unit back after talking to LG customer support. They said there were updates that were not on thier web site and said they would mail them to me. I recieved two disks from LG. There is one labeled BD.8.16.059.A and another labeled HL06P. No instuctions so I put in the first one and sure enough, it was a higher rev than the one I downloaded from the LG site. The disk updated the player "SW Version" from BD.8.08.021 to BD.8.08.24B. I let it update then put in the second disk. It updated the player "Driver Version" from BD61540 to BD61560. The unit works much better now. No wierd audio popping noise and the disks play great. I increased my rating of the player from 2 stars to 3 stars. It is kind of disappointing they they didn't have these updates online and that it took over 2 weeks to get the disks but the unit does work much better now. I hope this info helps someone else.
