Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: LG BD370: So Far, Only 3.5 To 4 Stars...Things You Should Know!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first standalone blu-ray player and so far I'm...satisfied with it. I guess I was expecting a little more from this player than what I got, but that's not to say it isn't a good player for its price (probably one of the best in fact), however there are a few better ones out there if you have the dough to blow on them.

First, let's start with the reasons why I decided to get this player.

1. I wanted a standalone blu-ray player to play my blu-rays on my HDTV (and DVD's) instead of having to use my computer.
2. I wanted a player that could play video files through a USB flash drive.
3. I wanted to invest in the future and get streaming capabilities. (Netflix, YouTube)
4. I only had about $250 to spend on a blu-ray player. (It was a graduation present actually, but I didn't want my folks to spend too much, since they wouldn't have any way!) The LG BD370 fit the bill! (no pun intended!)

These are pretty much listed in order of importance. #1 does exactly what I want it to...for the most part. The blu-ray plays fantastically! The picture, sounds, motion is better than what my computer gave me on my HDTV (1080p via HDMI of course) and is comparable to other setups I've seen (Best Buy displays using newest Samsung LCD HDTV's and blu-ray players, etc. Indecently, that's where I bought this player.) I've read other "professional reviewers" reviews and they say the blu-ray playback quality is not quite up to snuff when compared to the other newly released players, but I don't see it. They may have been using some visual benchmark test, but the BR playback is great! I'd say, an A- in overall quality. DVD up-conversion is another story however. This unit replaced a Sony DVP-NS77H up-converting DVD player and the image quality I received from that Sony player (via HDMI @ 1080p) was slightly better than what the BD370 gives. It still does an overall decent job, but it could use some improvement (Possibly in a future firmware update?) Overall quality for DVD up-conversion gets a B-. **They do have an update (as of the time I write this) that you can download online off their site, (and I'm assuming through the player's connection to the internet) that "improves playability for specific DVD's". Don't know if it improves image quality, but I read a posting where someone stated that once they did "update", that certain DVD's would not play at all, so I don't know.**

For #2, I was really looking forward to testing this out. Unfortunately, as I found out, this feature does not exist...at least not for us Americans! That's right people; those of you who have read some of the other reviewers here on Amazon stating that they can play HD video files through the USB connection, so far as I've been able to find out, is only a feature found on the European/Australian versions of the player! I was SEVERLY disappointed to find this out AFTER I purchased this player. (I still probably would have bought it anyway, but I would have liked to have known this going in.) Apparently, since we Americans get the Netflix streaming (ONLY the American version of the player gets this since Netflix's service only OPERATES in America, so makes since), they compensate to the other countries by giving them video playback through the USB connection. Why not for the American version of the player? What's the rationale behind this? I tried to contact LG a couple times to ask, but never got a real response as to why this is. (No surprise there!) Again, hopefully this could be something they could add in a future firmware update. This player does, however, let you view photos (.jpeg, .jpg & .png) and listen to music (.mp3, .wma) through the USB connection on the American version. Your USB drive must be in FAT 16 or FAT 32 formats for this though. (Kinda stupid they don't have NTFS or exFAT or some other format support!)

#3...(insert future review info here). Yeah, unfortunately I can't comment on this part at this time. I don't have a connection for the player where I have it right now. I'm going to attempt to find some way to connect it to my computer and "share" the wireless internet connection it has. But since I do have my computer connected to my TV, I can just go to Netflix, select a movie and instant watch that way! (same thing for YouTube) I don't know how good this would look, but I want to test the player's ability on streaming. As soon as I do get it connected and working, I'll edit this review accordingly, so stay tuned!

Lastly, for #4 I looked at a number of other players, comparing prices, specs, ratings, reviews, etc. I would have liked to get the LG BD390, but that would have been another $150 and that was just too much for me. I also thought about one of the Samsung or Sony models, but the Samsungs have shaky reviews and the Sony's, while having excellent disc playback quality, do not have any streaming services (namely Netflix, only Samsung and LG have this right now) at this time. (None I'm aware if anyway) There are other lower-brand blu-ray players out there, but they do not have as many features. It all comes down to how much you're willing to spend and what features you want. Mix those two combinations together and my top choice was the BD370 player!

@ $249, this blu-ray player is one of the best you can get at the price. It could stand a couple of improvements that hopefully will be introduced in future updates. I plan on keeping this player for the foreseeable future and am happy with its overall performance.
