Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG 32LD450 32-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTVCustomer Review: The second one might have to go back too - audio glitches Summary: 3 Stars
Got this TV about a month ago to replace my old 27"CRT I'd been using with a digital converter box. I don't have cable or subscription satellite so I am mainly interested in the performance with an antenna and a Roku box that I use for Netflix downloads. The local stations (San Diego) broadcast in 1080i or 720p and I get a solid signal from them with a roof mounted antenna.
The picture looks great to me but remember my last TV was a 10 year old CRT so it's not that hard to impress me. My one gripe with this set is that the sound occasionally drops out for a fraction of a second on one of the broadcast channels I get. I have another TV and it doesn't do this so I'm pretty sure it's the TV and not the signal. Also if I tune the same station from the same antenna on a separate HD tuner and feed the output from the tuner into one of the HDMI ports I don't have the audio dropouts. Odd that it only does this on one of the 24 broadcast stations I receive but that's what happens. I plan to keep the set for another few weeks and see if replacing coax cables helps, also I'll put this set where the other one is and see if the same problem occurs with that connection. If the problem is definitely with the set and not the signal or the cabling I'll have to send it back for exchange. The performance with the Roku box is fine but that only puts out a 720p signal - the audio problem happens when I tune to a 1080i broadcast signal.
Update November 16 2010 - I sent the first set back and asked for a replacement to be sent. Received the replacement a few days ago and hooked it up to the same connections as I had used on the original. This one doesn't have the audio dropouts that the first one did. The software version in the first one was 03.04.33 and the model number was 32LD450-UA. The replacement has software version 03.04.36 and the model number is GLOBAL-PLAT2. Seems strange the the model number would change on the Customer Service screen but not on the box. Whatever, this one seems to work so far.
Update December 1 2010 - the replacement may have to go back as well - I'm still getting audio dropouts. I will run a test later today by watching a show on the TV while recording the same show on a PVR. I'll note any audio dropouts and then watch the recorded version to find out if the dropouts occur at the same times - this should confirm that it's a problem with the TV and not the station. I've recorded this station before and had dropouts during playback - but the dropouts disappeared when I rewound and played back the same part of the recording - so I theorize that the broadcast is OK and the recording is OK but the TV has some sort of intermittent problem playing the audio. This happens whether I use the TV's speakers or the optical output to my surround sound system.
Update December 16 2010:
Strange audio problem on VHF channels
TV - LG 32LD450 32-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV
Antenna - ChannelMaster 2018
Pre amp - Winegard AP8700
Audio - Onkyo HT-S3300 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver and Speaker Package
Bought this TV as it was reasonably priced for a full HD (1080i) set and the 32" size was the largest that would fit in my cabinet. When the TV was delivered I hooked it up in place of the old 27" CRT I had been watching for about 10 years. It worked well, finding all the local OTA channels and producing a great picture. The only problem was that the audio on some of the channels was not reliable. On channels 8 and 10 (both are on their original VHF channels as they were when they were analog) and on channel 69 (which is on UHF channel 19) I experienced audio dropouts lasting a second or so and on 69 in particular I would hear a squeal sometimes. I changed the coax from the splitter to the TV and that fixed channel 69 so I tried changing the splitter to a higher quality one and also tried running without the splitter and channels 8 and 10 still weren't right. The cable from the antenna to the preamp and from the preamp down to the house is all RG-6, about 35 feet in total.
I have a Sonicview 8000HD satellite receiver which also has an ATSC tuner built in and has an HDMI output. When I connected the SV to the TV via HDMI and tuned the SV to channel 8 or 10 the audio problems went away for the most part but there were still occasional dropouts. The SV has recording capability via USB to a hard drive so I tried recording to the hard drive and playing back to the TV via HDMI. I still had some dropouts but if I replayed the section of the recording where I had heard the dropouts they were gone. This all led me to believe that the TV tuner was the problem so I sent it back to Amazon and asked to have it replaced with the same model. A few days later the new TV arrived and I hooked it up and lo and behold it did the same thing.
By this time I was tired of chasing the problem and since I had a work around I quit looking. Then I remembered that I had a Samsung SIR-T451 HD receiver left over from the early days of digital TV so I dug that out of the closet and hooked it up. I had retired it as the tuner only recognizes the strongest OTA channels but in this case those are channels 8 and 10 so I thought it might be useful. It has an SPDIF optical output which I hooked up to my surround sound system and it has component video outputs which I hooked up to the TV. Now I can watch channels 8 and 10 using either the TV tuner or the Samsung for the video and the Samsung for the audio and it's glitch free, at least so far.
Any guesses as to what might be going on here are welcome.
I tried to send this summary to LG customer service but their website rejected it in various ways - first the website was "temporarily down for maintenance", then the email and confirm emails "didn't match" (even though they were both pasted from the same source) - maybe LG doesn't want to receive customer support requests - cuts down on the number of complaints I suppose
