Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Klipsch iGroove SXT iPod Sound System (Black)Customer Review: Priced very competitively for the quality Summary: 5 Stars
When shopping for an I-pod dock, I compared a number of different models. The only one I could find that sounded better than the Klipsch SXT was the Bose SoundDock which is almost twice as much as the Klipsch. Unless you just have to have the best available option, or you listen to music almost constantly at very high volume, the extra $$$ you will spend on the Bose is unjustified in my opinion.
I also looked at the Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 but it has an inferior response range, and just didn't sound as good. This was most noticeable in the higher ranges, where the Altec got pretty pitchy.
The Philips DC910/37 is also inferior, with a large amount of distortion present at higher volumes. I also checked out a few others that I don't remember well enough to comment on, but they were all uninspiring when it came to sound quality.
Klipsch is one of my favorite speaker manufacturers, and I've come to trust their brand to provide quality sound for a very reasonable price. The SXT dock is not an exception. This dock is not made for an audiophile, and if you expect it to perform like free standing audiophile speakers, or even high quality ear buds, you will be disappointed. However, if you want a quality dock for a reasonable price, the SXT is a really nice option.
If you want an even better, but much less portable option, get yourself a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. With a dedicated, powered sub, and large R/L speakers, they will really fill a room with sound in a way that this dock will not. They also are not as sleek, and require more space.
Customer Review: Compromise Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Kilpsch for my daughter who wanted a small unit for her Ipod, ok so what is the big deal there are a lot of products on the market that do that The Kilpsch has a small foot print with excellent sound, very close to the Bose unit that is almost twice the price and I am judging the quality of the sound, again taking into consideration the size and price. The JBL unit is a bit odd in shape with the speakers pointed up. It does pump out the music impressively but if you are picky, it is a bit odd for the speakers to be reflecting the sound up and sort of out. My daughter is thrilled with the Kilpsch and that was my second choice when I purchased a unit for myself.
I settled on the Altec Lansing IM600 whose sound is very close to the Kilpsch and has the bonus of running on a battery and having a FM tuner. My daughter however wanted the Kilpsch therefore here opinion carried the day. A normal person would be hard pressed to say one sounds better than the next and even my daughter now concurs and my bet is my Altec is going to be hijacked in the near future.
There is another unit that if you can find is sort of a black sheep and that is the SONY. This little unit produces a sound quality that rivals anything out there including the Bose. It has a woofer that looks like a AC adapter which you can shove to the side and the speakers are small, silver and sleek. The sound from this is truly remarkable. I received this as a gift last week (one of those you cannot return). It is like many SONY products a bit quirky but in terms of producing sound very impressive. Amazon has it so its worth looking at and again an impressive unit.
A word of advice, many of these docking stations have problems charging the latest generation of IPods which frankly I don't see as that big of a deal. Also some have issues providing full functionality with their remotes, so you need to do some research if that is a big deal.
Customer Review: Big Sound, Small Footprint Summary: 5 Stars
The Klipsch iGroove has to be one of the best iPod docks in terms of value for money. As of this writing, it sells for around $100 and I'll go as far as to say you won't find a better sounding setup for that price.
I've listend to the Bose and while it sounds great, I just can't justify paying almost triple for it. On the other hand, I've tried some of the ~$70 units- they sound horrible and the "savings" aren't worth it.
The Klipsch provides great sound. I listen to everything, including jazz, metal, classical, rock, country and well... everything. This deck plays them all beautifully.
It's small enough to fit on your desk at work (about the size of a Kleenex box) but capable of being the sole source of tunes for a big party as well. I was simply shocked at how loud this baby will get if you want it to. That said, the quality of the sound is still exceptional at volumes better suited for your office.
I use it with an iPod classic and have not had a single problem with any of the features. My only complaint (and a very very small one) is that there is no volume indicator on the unit, so you're never sure exactly where the volume is set until the music starts. Normally this isn't a problem unless your roomate was jamming out while you were gone and forgot to turn it back down before you got home and docked your iPod. Again, this is really a minor complaint.
As for styling, the unit is sleek and very chic with a black front and silver accents. However, if you don't like the looks, you can hide the device on account of it being so small. We have ours nestled in among some pictures on the mantle and you'd never know it was there if you weren't looking for it.
All in all, I couldn't be happier with this iPod dock. It's got great sound, plenty of volume (if you want it), looks nice, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. What more could you ask for?
Customer Review: Incredible sound and value Summary: 5 Stars
I originally started searching for an iPod alarm clock. My wife and son already have an iHome, and I considered one for myself, but I was never impressed with the sound quality, so I decided to do a little research. After some simple web searches, I found a couple iPod alarm clocks that were rated better than the iHome, at similar prices. One of the items that came up in my search was the Klipsch iGroove SXT. It doesn't have an alarm clock, but it has instant-on capability with the alarm clock feature of every iPod. After thinking about this, it made so much more sense for me. First, there are already 2 digital clocks in our bedroom: my wife's aforementined iHome, and one on our cable TV box. The latter is easily seen from our bed. It just didn't make sense to have yet another clock eating up electricity in the room. Second, I already own Klipsch speakers, and *love* their sound. So I went to BestBuy to check it out. Well it didn't take long to convince me this was the way to go. The sound is rich and bright, just as I like it, and as I expected from Klipsch. I paid $170 for it right then and there. I could probably have save a few $$$ had I shopped around, but I didn't bother. I use this unit primarily as an alarm clock with my iPod, and it suits that function beautifully. However, when needed, this unit can rock our bedroom with the sound quality one would expect from Klipsch. Lastly, the footprint of this unit is quite small: a little wider than an iHome, but not as deep. The black finish looks very compact and elegant on my nightstand. I am extremely impressed and happy with this unit, and would recommend it to anyone shopping for similar units.
Customer Review: A very good product, though I had hoped for a bit more Summary: 5 Stars
I'm giving this product five stars despite some mild disappointment on my part. Probably like a lot of folks I have been frustrated at not being able to play my iPod over anything other than my earphones. So I got this so that I could listen to music without using my noise isolating earphones. For one thing, I wanted to be able to hear phone calls or hear the door bell ring.
The only problem with this unit is probably my expectations. I was hoping for a unit that would sound nearly as good over the small speakers as it does over my earphones. It doesn't. But that really says more about what I was hoping for rather than what was reasonable. The fact is that the iGroove provides great sound at a relatively small price. Does it rival the sound of a speaker system with a subwoofer? Absolutely not. But for its size it provides quite a wallop.
On the upside this is a very attractive unit and takes up very, very little space on my desk. And it is incredibly easy to use. I come home, take off my earphones, pop my iPod into my iGroove, and go about my business.
My one real complaint is with the remote. The remote is, to be honest, almost useless. The only real use would be if you were sitting a few feet away and wanted to make minimal adjustments. But you can't use it to choose what you listen to apart from skipping to the next song or scooting back to the previous. In fact, I find that I use the iPod wheel instead of the remote.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants an easy and convenient way to listen to their iPod over speakers.
