Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)Customer Review: Perfect Problem Solver for Inadequate Bass Response Summary: 5 Stars
KLIPSCH SYNERGY Sub-12: Unlike most people who purchase a Sub-woofer to add to their Home Theater (HT) system, I needed a Sub for another reason. I had to replace my 25 yr old Integrated Amplifier with a modern A/V Receiver. One thing I didn't forget was to pick a Receiver with Phono input for my turntable (26 yrs old). But, I didn't realize until a few days later, after figuring out how everything else worked on the new component, that it did not have a "loudness" button on it either. I didn't think about it at first because mine was always turned on. I only have one pair of speakers connected to it; a couple of Klipsch Heresy's that I have had forever. These small box speakers do not have much low-end response, maybe 50-60 Hz at most.
Well, the old "loudness" compensation would normally boost the low-end enough to be adequate for my listening purposes, but with this modern A/V Receiver, the speakers sounded very flat and turning the Bass up to its highest point didn't change things much. It was becoming obvious to me that the design of these 5.1 & 7.1 Surround Systems was that the designers really expect you to hook up a sub for "full-range sound" and that an adequate amount of bass response was missing from the standard left and right front channels even when I picked "Large" speakers in the set-up. So, off I went to the local Best Buy to listen to some of the models I found here on Amazon when I searched for Sub-woofer: Polk Audio, Klipsch, etc. My budget was $200 - $300 and I hoped the little Polk PSW10 would do what I needed since it had recently gone on sale for a substantial savings. But, after hearing the performance of the more powerful Klipsch models I knew I just had to have one. The local store was out of stock on the Synergy 10" so I was able to make a deal on the larger 12" model for about $50 off by complaining that I really wanted the 10" model they were out of (Oh Yeah!) I got the larger model with a 300 watt built in amplifier. This thing has been awesome. Very easy set-up, used the LFE connecter from my Denon AVR-2308 Receiver, and so far only have the sub at ˝ gain on the volume/input and it fills the room with all the low-end frequencies I was missing before without being "boomy". I am only listening to music with this set-up. Home Theater is not quite as demanding as continuous music input. This really fills in the kick-drum and subtle, low-end Bass guitar notes.
I feel this sub has all the features anyone would probably want: variable crossover from 40-120 Hz, High level inputs and Low level (line) inputs, LOW frequency response = 24-120 Hz, Auto power On/Off, phase switch, very adequate power at 300 watts continuous (600 watt peak), and a 2 yr warranty.
