Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Klipsch CS-500 2.1 Home Theater System with DVD PlayerCustomer Review: Great sound, not-so-great console Summary: 2 Stars
Follow-up review after returning faulty console: STILL BUYER BEWARE!!!
I received my replacement console after waiting 1 MONTH! I was told that was the averge wait time from submitting the product back to Klipsch and receiving another one. And after waiting a month, the DVD/CD player doesn't even operate. So if you're looking to buy, you might want to set your sights on something that's more reliable. I love the sound, but if it doesn't all work then you're not getting all you paid for, even with a deep discount. As a consumer, you still want your purchase to work as promised. Another thing I noticed is Klipsch's generic statement/reply to those of us who experienced problems. Although I never received one, I can't help but think there's someone at Klipsch just hitting a button or copying and pasting the same thing over and over when they see these lower rated reviews. Good luck!
My rating my be a bit premature because I have not called the Klipsch hotline/support yet; they're not open on Sundays. I'll rate it higher (or lower) after I speak with customer service. There will be a follow-up review.
I purchased the CS-500 on July 6, 2010 as part of Amazon's daily deal, and after a month it needs to be replaced. Many reviewers expressed issues with the DVD player, but I decided to gamble anyway. Unfortunately for me, the DVD player started to skip and freeze within a week. I tried to stomach it as best I could but it grew progressively worse to the point where I couldn't play a DVD. HOWEVER, today (Aug 8) the picture went out entirely; I watched the Klipsch icon on the screen just fizzle out. After spending time troubleshooting the Klipsch, the TV, and video cable, I determined there is a problem with the Klipsch console's video connection; the TV and cable operate fine.
On a positive note, I agree with the sentiments of other reviewer's; Klipsch CS-500 produces a clear, excellent sound in a small-medium room. For a 2.1 unit, I was very content with the sound quality in my small living room. Crisp highs, mids, and lows were heard on low, middle and very loud volume settings, and the simple on-screen EQ adjustments were adequate to get the sound I wanted overall. I noticed a volume disparity between certain sources. The TV and DVD source volumes were lower than the FM, AM and CD player volumes. so be aware that you will have to volume adjust as you travel between certain sources. I really liked the unit during the first few days it worked properly, and was very satisfied. Of course, a good 5.1 or 7.1 system will sound more encompassing, but if you're looking for great sound in a compact system with minimal setup time (1 hour - to rearrange and set up digital cable box, Wii, XM radio and tweak sound settings), and you don't want to spend too much money, then you may want to gamble like I did. For $200-$250, I doubt you'll beat the sound with a cheaper brand, even a cheaper brand with 5.1 surround sound. If you're fortunate and everything works properly, then you'll be hard-pressed to beat the price for the sound quality.
Another reviewer who had DVD problems stated that you should just connect a DVD player into an available aux slot. I was seriously considering doing that until the video feed conked out entirely; if it's any indication, I was actually willing to overlook the faulty DVD player because I did enjoy the sound. Unfortunately, now I definitely have issues. I'm a bit disappointed in the quality because Klipsch is a better-quality brand, but no one's perfect and I wasn't caught off guard with the amount of DVD issues expressed by others - win some, lose some. Hopefully customer service will quickly correct the situation, otherwise it's back to the old, reliable 15 year-old Kenwood.
