Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1

Customer Review: Fast, Cheap - What more could you ask for?
Summary: 5 Stars

I had high expectations for this card reader because of some flash memory benchmark tests I read through at Rob Gailbraith's website (http://www.robgalbraith.com - "CF/SD" on the left menu and then select Card-Computer in the drop down menu). I was mostly interested in the CF reading ability for my DSLR.

According to the site, it appears to be the fastest/$ CF reader tested for many newer cards. It even supports UDMA cards (but not 300x Transcends). It offers very fast speeds, and it generally only bested by FireWire 800 card readers, which are generally about 3+ times more expensive. Plus you must have a FireWire 800 port (not regular FireWire 400). Not many computers come stock with FW800, and a PCI/PCI-E card is at least $40 I think. Therefore, you'd have to pay at least $80 more to get somewhat faster performance if you have a fast enough card (200x or higher).

I also like the design of the short USB cable for carrying along in a laptop back without worrying about wires.

Customer Review: This product rocks!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to replace a sandisk card reader that I was disappointed to find broken, though that reader lasted 5 years. This reader will be an amazing replacement that is for sure.

It can read any type of card that you could feasible still be using today. I have seen some mixed reviews on the fact that the whole reader can slide back into the reader's casing. I don't know why you wouldn't LOVE this feature!! I can put my SDHC card into the reader and slide the reader into its casing and it offers protection from accidentally bumping the card and breaking it in the reader or ejecting the card in the middle of data transfer causing the card to potentially need reformatting (say bye to all your data) and you can leave your memory card in the reader and just have it on your desk without fear of damage just to store it.

Overall the price is high for what it is but because of a cool design, nice features, and the ability to read any type of media I highly recommend this to you!!

Customer Review: Works great, but won't retract
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm not sure why the card reader was made with a retractable piece built into a plastic housing, but it doesn't work on the one I bought. Pushed the top button and slide the reader out to the edge... and it never went back in. Even after splitting a nail and causing a bloody finger injury, it won't retract. Oh well... other than that defect, the reader part works flawlessly.

I have used a few SDHC cards and several brands of CF card in the reader. ALL work quickly on 3 computers I've plugged the reader into. Truthfully, I have never gone wrong with a Kingston product... and this one didn't let me down either.

Although it's not a huge thing, I also like the USB extension cable that is included with the reader. The cable can be used for other USB devices... and allows me to place the reader on my desk, while my PC is on the floor. Or, the reader can plug directly into my laptop, without 3 feet of cable hanging around, getting in the way. Nice touch Kingston!

Customer Review: Disapointing...
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this because it handles many formats of cards but specifically it reads MicroSD. I am also using Kingston cards so that fact that I'd be using a reader by the same manufacturer somehow seemed to be a plus.
However, although I have not tested all the "slots", MicroSD does NOT work. Not even with 2 different Kingston cards. (they work fine if I use the adaptor and plug into the standard SD slot- but that defeats the purpose)
Another semi-useful but disapointing piece of electronics from China.
The retractable shell design that protects cards in use from bumping and dislodging, is interesting.
Could be that nobody cares about quality control anymore and my unit has a defect with the wiring to the MicroSD reader, but regardless, I'd avoid this one.
Can't return it of course because the original packaging is now gone...and is it really worth it to return something under $20 anyway.
Our modern life...technology sure ain't the fix.

Customer Review: Works exactly as promised
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a computer with a media reader. Even with a Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM, the computer hiccuped and froze up whenever I wanted it to read my camera's SD card. Now that I have the Kingston card reader, what a change! It's easy to install. You basically just plug it into your USB port and it automatically installs its software and drivers. It also has a short USB cord and an extender cord, which is nice. Considering the USB port is usually on the back of the tower (where it's dusty and annoying to fiddle with), it's nice to be able to switch out whatever's plugged into my USB without having to access the tower.

The reader easily accesses the SD card and everything on the card pops up immediately. Transfer to and from the card and the PC is very quick. I'm very happy with this purchase and think it's a great deal. Very well priced, and you don't have to burn through the camera's battery just to upload pics.
