Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1Customer Review: Hardware Works Well, BUT... Summary: 5 Stars
The Kingston card reader is functioning well thus far - once I was able to get it to work!
I purchased this to "replace" a crappy Dell 19-in-1 reader that they installed with my computer. What junk.
I'm keeping the Kingston connected, dangling from it's short USB cord.
Documentation is non-existent. Nada. And until you go to the Kingston Website and download and install their driver/software, this little marvels just sits and does nothing.
It *will* work once it has a driver installed on your machine (the reader and your computer must agree on which theoretical "drives" your various card slots will occupy), but until you spend a few minutes readying things, the reader is useless.
The extension USB is a nice touch, as the built-in cord is itty-bitty. Overall, the reader physically "feels" a bit flimsy and fragile, so I wouldn't use it for anything other than light-duty use. But then again, look at the low price!
If you need something for a commercial application, i.e., with every-day, all-day use, I'd probably seek something else.
DEFINITELY recommended without reservation.
Customer Review: Great little reader... Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased a 4GB SDHC card to go with my new Nikon digital SLR only to find my trusty old multi-format reader didn't work with it. I went to a few BIG BOX stores seeking something to use without luck... they are still relatively rare. After searching the web I decided to buy the Kingston reader. It is a great little reader. I current only have cameras that use SD, Micro SD, SDHC, and Memory Sticks... all these and more are read rapidly.
The reader comes with a very, very short USB cord attached, but Kingston also included a USB extension cord that enabled me to plug into the rear ports of my desktop's CPU with ease. The reader's sliding case allows you to keep cards plugged into the unit while traveling seems awkward at first, but is a really cool idea. Using "My Computer", the Nikon's SDHC card's data appeared on my screen labeled as a "Nikon data port"... very convenient. I have only used the reader for simple single card data retrieval and it worked flawlessly. I am very happy with the fast service the vendor supplied and the operation of this neat device. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: New Camera old computer Summary: 5 Stars
Last month I purchased a Nikon D5000 camera and picked up a high speed HDSD card to use with it just to find out that my computer, being a Sony, didn't have an SD port. The solution for this problem came in the form of this "Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader."
When I purchased it I thought this reader had a flap that closed over the front of the case but that did not turn out to be so. However the insertion ports do slide back into the casing which will allow you to leave a card in place without the risk of it getting hit, bent or broken. This is a nice feature if you have little children (oh how little fingers love to touch what they shouldn't be touching).
The reader works great, plug it in and use, it is that simple. It works flawlessly with my high speed HDSD card. I have had no problem getting the cards in or out of the reader however I have not tried a micro card.
I would highly recommend this reader. Nice price, functions very well, has a short cord that works well with my laptop and an extension USB cable so it is easy to move to my desktop.
Customer Review: Card Reader Summary: 4 Stars
I owned a Sandisk reader and really felt is was solid and used it for traveling and home for many years. Problem was, I felt it was too big for traveling. So, I ordered this Kingston reader after buying numerous Kingston cards, which work very well BTW, and paid a good price for it. It was about half the cost of the SanDisk. The reader works very well, is compact and travels well. My only concern is it feels cheap, not solid, sort of tinny, and I handle it with kid gloves. The connection cord seems a bit too short and storing the cord back into the unit is cumbersome and the metal tab you wrap the cord under is sharp and difficult to work around. It is exactly what I thought I would get for the price I paid, and if it fails I haven't lost that much. I, like many others, have learned you get what you pay for. This unit is small enough for traveling and handles various cards well. I feel you need to baby it because of its' build quality. That is not a criticism, just a statement of fact. Would I buy another or recommend to a friend? Absolutely!
Customer Review: Does NOT read 16GM Kingston CompactFlash Card Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this card reader, along with a Kingston 16gb CF memory card, to use for copying photos I take with my digital camera.
My first impression of the unit is that the construction was pretty flimsy; but my real concern (and reason for the 2 star rating) is that this reader DOES NOT read a 16gb CF memory card made by the same manufacturer.
When attempting to download photos from my high capacity memory card onto my hard drive, the reader was able to read and download the ONLY the first 1mg. After that, it gave me a "can't read from device" error and the drive represented by the reader disappeared from list of devices shown under My Computer. Consequently, I had to disconnect the USB cable and then plug it back in again.
I tried the above download operation several times; but I got the same error each time.
I will be returning this unit; so if anyone out there knows of a memory card reader that does work with high capacity memory cards ... please let me know its make and model.
