Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler I - 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTI/8GB

Customer Review: Works on Macs but is slow
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the third DataTraveler I have owned in recent years, and like the 2 and 4 G versions, it works adequately well on the Mac. Moreover, unlike some other flash drives, there is no annoying Windows-only software that pops up automatically on the desktop. However, transfer speeds seem much lower compared with the 4 G model, and time to mount or unmount the disk seems high. Another shortcoming is that it requires more power than can be delivered from the keyboard USB port, which can be inconvenient. Unless you really need the larger capacity, I would go for a smaller faster model in this line. Alternatively, there may be faster flash drives in another Kingston model or from another company.

Customer Review: Great USB drive
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros: Fast, small(physical size),enough space for 4 years of school work if you don't put unnecessary things in it. Cap clips on the back of the device when you are working with it, a very nice feature for those who do not want to worry about the cap.

Cons: There is a small loop in the back for clipping a string on (if so desired) for ease of carry. However, if you do this the cap no longer clips on the back, thus you have to put the cap in a safe place until you unplug the flash drive from the computer. Myself, I dislike having to worry about caps (My last thumb-drive was retractable) was initially annoyed at this feature.

Overall: I would buy this again.

Customer Review: Decent Flash Drive for the money
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for a high speed flash drive to be use in my Sony Blu-ray BDP-S350 player and the Amazon search returned this Kingston DTI/8GB. I read others' reviews with how fast this was. However, after receiving this item, I wanted to see if this was a high speed flash drive so I did a timed test. I transfer a 351Mb file from my laptop to this drive in 1 min 10 secs while the transfer time to a Dane-Elec 8GB zMate Pen High-Speed (Up to 480mbps super-fast transfer rate ) was 1 min 16 secs. I bought this from Amazon for $17.87 while the Dane-Elec was $11.90.

If you really want a true Kingston high speed flash drive, it's the DataTraveler 400 model not this one.

Customer Review: Can't beat this for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this 8GB flash drive dozens of times in the very short time I've had it. It's held up perfectly.

On my windows xp system it goes a little slower than some flash drives I've used, but the lack of U3 more than makes up for it.

On my windows vista system it goes like lightning. I can dump a full 8GB on it in just a few minutes. I could have never done that with my old flash drive.

On that note, I had no problems switching back and forth between xp and vista. Simply plug it in and fill it up, then unload it on whatever other system you want.

Considering how cheap it is, I don't think you can find a better deal.

Customer Review: Has trouble properly transporting larger files!
Summary: 2 Stars

Bought this product in 2009 only because I had previously bought a very reliable Kingston 12-in-1 USB card reader. To my dismay, since I use this drive mostly to transport large files (AVis or Quicktimes from my digital camera, anywhere from 50MB to 2GB in size), I found it be painfully slow. To make matters worse, for some odd reason, it has a hard time recognizing larger movie files once they're done transporting (I use a Mac, running 10.5). So what I end up with often times are a bunch of corrupt movie files that cannot be opened. Reformatting the drive hasn't solved the issue either. If I were you, I'd spend my money elsewhere on a more reliable brand.
